Today mistletoe is recognised throughout the world as a symbol of lasting peace ahd from this has come the custom of giving a kiss of love or peace beneath it. Once, however, It was considered a weapon of death. Later is was considered a magical medicine. It was a mistletoe arrow, according to Norse mythology, that Loki used to kill Balder, the sun god, after Balder’s mother had obtaln-
Christmaa Giving The first Christmas gifts were those which the Wise Men carried to Bethlehem to lay before the Chirst Child in the manger. Their gifts, given in adoration, were precious of the day—gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The latter two wore gum resins used in medicines and perfumes. But, then as now, it is the spirit of giving rather than the gift itself that makes it most appreciated.

ed a promise from all living things, other than that they woud not harm him. Balder was restored to life and it was ruled by the gods that the mistletoe would never again be l used to do harm. i Ancient Europeans considered the mistletoe a magical medicine. They carried it about with them i for health and luck, and believed , it a cure for ulcers and epilepsy as weU as a charm promoting fertility.
The Communist government of Czechoslovakia instructed its people not to buy Christmas cards, but instead to give the money for publishing Red books. i .' ' ' •e • . Santa Claus and angels were banned from Christmas cards in Red Hungary. It was decreed that holiday gifts should be pictured being brought to K good little children by tractors.
Calendar Dates From 1882; Will Last Until 2500 Despite efforts from time to time to set up a n?w method ot marking time, the Gregorian calendar, instituted by Pope Gregory in the year 1582 appears unlikely to be replaced for some time to come .., probably until at least 2500 A. D. Mathematicians guarantee that the calendar will be accurate until that time. The Gregorian calendar still doesn’t please everybody. But this is not unusual. People like to bo fussy about time. Once a year in. many areas of the Itaitgd States there is the annual squabble about the use of "daylight saying time”. Periodically, residents id one area who live in the edge of another time sone attempt to get the sones changed. Kentucky, for example, was the scene of such activity recently when residents of several cities of that state, tiring of switching each summer to “daylight saving time” attempted to get their clocks moved up an hour all year round by having the Eastern Time Zone extended further westward. Our current method of keeping time takes into consideration the solar year which actually consists of 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 46 seconds. Because of the extra hours, minutes and seconds, it is required that the Gregorian calendar contain a well-ordered | system of Leap Years to keep the calendar and the solar equinoxes congruent. The Gregorian Calendar provides that years divisible by four, exclusive of the years numbering the centuries—shall have 366 days, and the cenutry-marking years shall be leap years only if they are divisible by four after the ciphers have been removed. Rose Bowl Gome Was Not Always Main Attraction Os Tournament Os Roses The Rose Bowl football game began as a supplement to the Tournament of Roses in 1002. Success of the California classic brought about the many "bowl” games that are played today. Surprisingly, the Rose Bowl football game did not catch the immediate I fancy of the public. After the 1902 game, in which Michigan defeated Stanford, chariot races were subr stituted and collegiate football was not a part of the Tournament aS Roses again until 1916. But tha “daddy” of the bowl games has been going great guns ever since.' Year 46 B. C. ContaiMd Over Four Hundred Days The year we now refer to M 41 B. C., was the longest year in cal- I endar history. It contained 446 days, and for a very good reason. Numa Pompilius supposedly created the Roman calendar in the seventh century B. C. Despite the fact that it was revised several times, this calendar was some two months behind the sun by the time I of Julius Ceasar. Ceasar pat his experts to work; revising the calendar. The experts came up with a calendar, but were somewhat undecided as to what should be done about ths two months needed to catch up with the sun. They solved the problem by inserting the two months between the months of November and Decern-, ber, thus giving the year 46 B. C. a total of 445 days. ' In Hastings, England, a man was arrested for kicking the public Yuletide tree and charged with "wilfully damaging a Christmas tree.” The arresting officer’s name was A. E. Christmas. ** * \ Public protests in Muskegon, Mich., forced a bank to remove a sign announcing: "There is no Santa Claus. Work, earn. isave’”

But, la jour de la bonne annee, as the French sal has a more serious side. Churches are generally crowded on New Year's Eve, which is aloe the Vigil of St Sylvester, an early pontiff and father of the Church.
