U.S. Davis Cuppers Will Meet Aussies PERTH, Australia (UPD—The United States clinched the right >to meet Australia in the Davis Cup challenge round today when Alex Olmedo and Hamilton Richardson scored a gruelling 7-9, 6-4, 13-11, 7-5 triumph over Italy’s Orlando Sirela and Nicola Pietrangeli in the interzone final. The doubles victory, following the two opening singles wins, gave the U.S. tennis team an unbeatable 3-0 lead in the best-of-ftve match series and reduced the final two singles matches to mere “exhibitions.” The United States will attempt to regain the famous cup from defending champion Australia in Brisbane, Dec. 29-31. Olmedo, who started the United I States on the victory path by beating Pietrangeli, 5-7, 10-8, 6-0. 6-1. in the first singles match, was the ]hero of the three-hour clinching doubles triumph. The 22-year-old Peruvian, a student at the University of Southern California, rallied the tired and off-form Richardson repeatedly. Olmedo, picked by U.S. nonplaying Captain Perry Jones in a surprise move that bypassed hardhitting Barry Mac Kay of Dayton, Ohio, did not lose his service once | during the entire match and was 'a tower of strength after the Italians took a 2-1 lead in the fourth set. Richardson, the one - time Rhodes scholar from Baton La., currently residing in Arlington, Va., defeated the 6-foot, 7inch Sirola, 64, 6-2, 7-5, in his opening singles match but was nowhere near that form in todey’s
doubles match. Pleasant Mills Plays Geneva Monday Night The Pleasant Mills Spartans will entertain the Geneva Cardinals at the Pleasant Mills gym Monday night. Valdes Winner On First Round TKO NEW YORK (UPD—Big Nino Valdes of Cuba, ecstatically elated over his first-round technical knockout of Pat McMurtry, announced today, “I am claiming the professional heavyweight championship of the world.” The explosive giant, who tagged McMurtry of Tacoma, Wash., with the first knockout of his career at 2:39 of the first round Friday night in Madison Square Garden, declared: “I’ll defend at any time against Floyd Patterson, who is really only an amateur champion because he defends only against amateurs. And I’ll kill him because I’m an assassin—a knockout assassin.” Valdes, who flew home to Havana this morning for a two-day visit, charged that Patterson was afraid to fight him because “he pulled away from a fight with me that was almost closed for the Garden on Dec. 5 or 12. Now he can get $400,00 for fighting me at Havana.” Nino, who weighed 213 pounds, is rated second among contenders by Ring magazine and fourth by the NBA. He was favored at 13-10 Friday night. Referee Harry Kessler stopped the nationally televised and broadcast bout Friday night because of New York state’s three-knockdown provision. He ruled that 26-year-old Pat, who never had been on the canvas before, was officially floored three times. Drug Store Owner Wounded In Holdup COLUMBUS, Ind.
