Chicago Cop Killer Dies In Chair Today First Execution In Chicago In 5 Years CHICAGO (DPI) — “Cop killer" Richard Carpenter, 29, died in the electric chair early today at Cook County jail. It was Chicago’s first execution in five years. Carpenter betrayed no emotion as guards made the necessary arrangements, throwing the switch at five minutes after midnight. He was pronounced dead at 12:11 a.m. Jail guards said Carpenter’s last action in his death row cell was to tear the heels off his shoes', saying he wanted no one to "walk in my shoes." Carpenter had been convicted of shooting a detective fatally in 1955, then holding an entire family hostage while a police dragnet was thrown over the city. Earlier Thursday, Supreme Court Justice Tom Clark ordered a stay of execution for another prisoner who was to have gone to the chair with Carpenter. Carpenter’s attorney, hearing of the stay, made another appeal to Clark in Washington, but was unsuccessful. The stay ordered by Clqrk was the 14th in the controversial case of Charles Townsend, 23, a Negro, who clubbed a man to death with a brick in a *1953 robbery. Townsend was a narcotics addict at the time of the slaying. His attorneys, claim that police used truth serum to elecit a confession from Townsend, and say this is a violation of his constitutional rights. Carpenter's lawyers also appealed their case on constitutional grounds, saying he was not sane enough to stand trial. Cold Wave Warning Issued To Indiana Most Os Midwest To Experience Cold United Press International A fresh blast of snow and subzero temperatures pushed into the northern plains late Thursday, whipped along by 30 to 40 mile per hour winds. The Chicago Weather Bureau issued cold wave warnings for most of the Midwest north of the Ohio River as cold north winds overran a mild, southerly flow of air. The cold Canadian air churned up snow at many points along the northern tier of states, as well as rain at some points where a brief reprieve from record cold had created balmy conditions. New snow—measured at three inches early Friday—continued to fall in Minnesota, the Dakotas, Wisconsin and Michigan. As much as six inches was forecast for Minnesota. In the mid-Mississippi Valley, as yet untouched by the approaching cold blasts, residents enjoyed the most pleasant nighttime conditions in weeks. A warming
