(UPL — An alert turnkey made suspicious by the whistling of a prisoner foiled an escape attempt at the Grant county jail late Wednesday night. Turnkey Charles Flanagan said he was attracted by the whistling of Walter Smith, 28, Knoxville, Tenn., as Smith was picking his cell lock with a wire. Flanagan took the wire from Smith, who was placed in solitary confinement. The turnkey said he smelled trouble because prisoners “don’t usually whistle late at night.” Smith and Etheridge Grubb, 21, Bloomington, escaped from the same jail last October but were recaptured. Smith was sentenced to six months at the state farm for jail breaking. He is scheduled to be transferred Dec. 30. It was the second time in less than two weeks that prisoners attempted to break out of the jail here. Three juveniles jumped turnkey Russell Stanley Dec. 4 with a pipe, but Stanley managed to throw the cell door shut, preventing their escape. Morton Refuses To Join GOP Rebels Liberal Revolt Is Given Severe Jolt WASHINGTON (UP!) — The “liberal” revolt among Republican senators received a severe jolt today. Sen. Thruston B. Morton (R-Ky.) refused to join their drive to capture the Senate GOP leadership. Morton announced he would support the “conservative” candidate. Sen. Everett M. Dirksen (R-Ill.), for floor leader unless his Kentucky colleague. Sen. John Sherman Cooper, sought die post. Morton was one df the undecided group the insurgent liberal bloc was hoping to corral. His statement at a news conference cast another damper on the hopes of the liberals for mustering; the necessary 18 votes to capture the leadership. / Dirksen. now the whip or assistant leader, is an avowed candidate for the leader’s post being vacated by Sen. William F. Knowland. The “liberals” are expected to offer an opposing candidate, possibly Sen. George D. Aiken (R-Vt.l. Morton told newsmen that he would support Dirksen over Aiken because “I think he would do a better job than (Aiken ) from all angles.” However, he said, if Cooper is a candidate, “I obviously would vote for him over Dirksen.” Cooper is not an avowed candidate although Sen. Prescott Bush (R-Conn.) has been seeking to drum up support for the former ambassador to India for one of the leadership posts. Morton said he thought Cooper was available but not necessarily a candidate.
