Commodores Lose To Hoagland Wildcats In Fourth-Quarter Rally

The Decatur Catholic Commodorei were defeated Tuesday night by the Hoagland Wildcats at the latters’ gym by a score of 73-65 after leading at half time by 12 points. -Although the Wildcats outscored the Commodores from the field by four field goals, the game was Ipst at the free throw line again as Decatur connected on 15 of 27 chances, while Hoagland dropped in 15 of 20 attempted. Decatur then took the lead with a jump shot by Baker, only to lose it again with a jump shot by Saalfrank of Hoagland. Scheuman connected for the Wildcats to build the lead to 5-2. With 4 minutes remaining in the first quarter, the Wildcats had built their lead to An exchange of shots by both clubs finished out the quarter and the Wildcats were on top by a score of 19-16. The wild and wooly second quarter saw Decatur scoring 27 points, while holding Hoagland to only 12. Wilder scored five field goals for 10 points. Baker three field goals and three free throws, and the Gross boys each connected for four points for Decatur’s scoring. Baker started the “hot" quarter for the Commodores by hitting his jump shot with only seven seconds gone. The Commodores caught fire and dropped in shots from all points on the floor. Wilder stole the ball on several occasions to help assist in points when not scoring from the field. The Commodores went to the dressing room at half time with a 12 point lead at 43-31. The Decatur quintet went cold during the third stanza, scoring only one field goal during the first four minutes and 12 seconds of play. The Hoagland boys contributed 10 points to their score during the same period to cut the Decatur lead to 45-41. Decatur again attempted to build its lead as shots by both Gross boys connected, building the Decatur lead to 48-41. Two shots from the far corners by Braun of the Wildcats cut the deficit to 48-44. A foul shot by Steve Omlor and a lay up on a stolen ball by Baker again built the Decatur lead to 51-44. Another corner shot by Braun and two charity tosses

Tom Gross connected on two foul shots while Scheuman hit from the field and the score was 65-60 with Hoagland leading. Baker dropped in another foul shot and Scheuman and Braun hit from the corners to give the Wildcats a 69-61 lead with only seconds remaining. Wilder, in a futile attempt to tie the game connected on two field goals while Scheuman and Grotrian each dropned in one from the field to give the Wildcats their final score 73-65 Baker led both clubs in scoring with 26 points, 20 of which were scored during the first half of the game. Scheuman of Hoagland was close to top scoring honors with 85, points. ♦ Two other Decatur players reached the double figure mark. Wilder with 20, and Tom Gross with 10. Three other Wildcats were in the double figures with Braun 17. Saalfrank 15, and Behrman 10. The Decatur five will travel to the Pleasant Mills gym Friday night for their next game of the season. The Commodores’ record now stands at two wins and seven losses. Gorillas Lose Second Game Os Season Tuesday The Hertford Gorillas suffered their second defeat of the season Tuesday, a real heart-breaker to the Redkey Wolves at Redkey, 63-62. The Gorillas lost it the real hard way, too, as Chalk, of Redkey, dropped in a pair of free throws with one second to play for the victory. The same lad hit seven of eight foul chances in the final period. Hartford led at the first quarter, 15-13, and at the half, 33-2 p, but Redkey held a 59-45 advantage at the third period. Hoover and Bixler were fouled *out of the game in the final quarter. Fred Miller, tall Hartford center, was the game's top scorer with 21 points. Dailey Bixler added 15 and Del McCune 11. Redkey had five players well bunched in scoring, Chalk leading with 13. The Gorillas, who now have a 7-2 season record .will be idle until Jan. 9, when they meet the Decatur Commodores at Decatur.
