PROLONGED COLD • Continued from page one Keokuk, lowa. At Peru, 111., the tug boat “Bull Calf,” owned by the Canal Barge Co. of New Orleans, sank in the Illinois River Tuesday night when it struck an ice floe. All eight men aboard escaped. Three youngsters drowned at Sanford. N.C., Tuesday when they fell through thin ice on a mill pond while skating. The deaths added to the mounting cold weather toll which now stands well above 100 since the snow and cold swept out of the West early this month. SALARY Continued from page one < fuse to pay anything. At the present, he said, Decatur charges $25 for a call within five miles, and $25 for any other call. The volunteer firemen do not get paid for the runs, the city loses valuable protection, and the expensive equipment gets beat up traveling over county roads, Fisher charged. The Monroe rural and Bluffton fire departments each charge $75 a run, whether or not they are actually used. Willshire charges SSO a run. he added. The only way to collect the fee charged is to have a contract with the township trustee, who may put fire protection in his township budget. Many departments refuse to go to fires in townships not so covered. Several examples were given, including three runs to Bobo, for which no payment was ever made by those whose property was burning. Decatur and the Monroe town department , have a reciprocal agreement by which each helps the other in the city without charging. Monroe helped on the garage fire in Decatur this past year, for example, without charge. A special meeting of the city I council will be held Dec. 30 at 7 p.m. in the council chamber to make appointments and close the year. G. Ration's Economy Reported Recovered Possible New High Records Foreseen WASHINGTON (UPD—Government economists said today the nation's economy has regained its pre-re cess ion proportions and is poised on the threshold of expansion tp new highs. They estimated the economy now is pouring out goods and services at a rate just a shade below—and possibly equal to—the ’ mid-1957 record. The record was set just before] the advent of the recession, whichmost economists agree started in September of last year and “bottomed cut ’ last April. The long economic trek back to pre-recession highs has been in progress ever since. Many economists have considered the recession ended for several months, but this is disputed by labor and business leaders who cite soft spots. A top-level source estimated that for the final three months of 1958, total output of goods and services will hit an annual rate of 453 billion dollars. Ulis would top by three billion dollars official expectations of two months ago. “It’s a rather high figure, conSALE CA DEC. 20—2:00 p. m. sidering what we've been through,” the official said. Allowing a 2 per cent correction for price increases, economists said, the economy is within Ms of 1 per cent of the record rate of 446 billion dollars posted in the third quatrer of 1957. Because the figures are subject to a small margin of error, the current business pace may actually equal the previous peak—but it may also be as much as 1 per cent below it. Motorist Fined For Running Stop Sign A fine was paid in justice of the peace court last night by a traffic offender after pleading guilty to disregarding a step sign. A second offender arrested Tuesday will appear later this week to the same charge. William C.
