Kansas State ' Is Upset By Brigham Young By JOHN GRIFFIN United Frets International A knee injury suffered by star Bob Boozer drew a large measure of the blame today for a stunning upset that sent second • ranked Kansas State tumbling from the ranks of the nation's unbeaten basketball teams— and only a rival s "boner kept Kentucky from suffering the same fate. Boozer, a leading All-America candidate, missed almost the whole second half and scored only eight points Monday night as Brigham Young upset Kansas State. 77-68, at Provo. Utah. That ranked as the biggest upset so far this season, but Maryland almost matched it before bowing to

second-ranked Kentucky, 58-56, in overtime at Lexington, Ky. Fired-up Brigham Young fought It# way to a 37-36 halftime lead over Kansas State and then the break of the game occurred early in the second half when Boozer hurt his knee. Almost immediately Brigham Young broke the game wide open as sophomore Gary Earnest led the way with 28 points, 16 of them in the second half. Wildcat Shooting Off Boozer returned in the closing minutes of the game but it vyas too late to save the Wildcats from their first defeat in five games. Another factor in the Wildcat loss was poor shooting — State sank only 27 per cent of its shots against 42 per cent for Brigham Young. Maryland, defending champ of the Atlantic Coast Conference, apapparently had Kentucky beaten with the Terrapins’ Bill Murphy sank two free throws for a 54-51 lead with only 12 seconds to play. But that’s when the “boner” saved Kentucky. Substitute Bill Coffman of the
NCAA champs drove down the right sideline and cut across to the baseline for a layup shot. If he’d been allowed to score unmolested, Maryland still would have had a 54-53 lead and possession of the ball with just three seconds left. But Maryland center Al Bunge fouled Coffmatn as he sank the layup. Coffman coolly sank the free throw to tie the score. In the overtime a 15-foot jump shot by Johnny ’Cox and two free throws by Dick Parsons gave Kentucky the victory. Foul Shota Save Kentucky Free throw shooting kept Kentucky in the game most of the way. The Wildcats, outshot and outrebounded by Maryland, sank 24 bf 29 free throws while Maryland sank only 14 of 27. Mississippi State, Purdue, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Rice were other highly-touted teams to post wins Monday night. All - America candidate Bailey Howell sank 38 points to lead 17thranked Mississippi State to a 98-71 roihp over Arkansas State, boosting his personal average to 32.5 per game. Purdue, ranked 19th nationally, was held to a one-point halftime lead by touring College of the Pacific but then brok loose for a 78-62 win as Bill Eison hit 26 points. Rice Beats Tulane Roger Taylor's 20 points led Illinois to an 68-46 win over an lowa State team that missed its first 18 shots. Wisconsin fretained enough of an early 13-point lead to beat Missouri, 68-60. And Dick Ball’s 22 points helped Rice hand Tulane its first loss of the year, 60-51. » In other leading games Monday night: Louisiana State scored more than half of its points on free throws to beat Texas. 52-47; Mike Moran’s 21 points led Marquette to a 79-63 decision over Drake; Duke scored its first win, 68-61, over South Carolina as soph Howard Hurt tallied 22; Jeff Cohen’s 31 points for William and Mary paced an 82-69 win over VMI; poor shooting on both sides marked Washington State’s 41-34 win Montana State; Mississippi held off a late rally to beat Southeast Missouri, 81-76; Seattle trounced Portland, 85 - 36; St. John’s (N.Y.) drubbed Hunter. 9152: and Nebraska beat Texas Tech. 54-46. Upsets Mark Boxing Bouts Monday Night United Press International Upsets featured the year's liveliest boxing night Monday, although a world champion and a ,European titleholder won their bouts handily. "Name” fighters like Johnny Saxton, Ralph (Tiger) Jones, Davey Dupas, Victor Zalazar and Ludwig Lightbum were licked, and heavyweight contender Zora Folley couldn’t draw enough money to permit a scheduled fight to be staged. However, Pascual Perez of Argentina made a successful eighth defense of the world flyweight title by winning a unanimous 15round decision over Filipino Dommy Ursua before 40,000 at Manila —largest crowd in Philippine fight history. And at Paris, Gustav Scholz of Germany, European middleweight champion, outpointed mustachioed Germinal Ballarin of France in a 10-round non-title bout. Zalasar Most Disappointed Perhaps the most disappointed fighter of the night was young Zalazar, Argentine middleweight Who went into the ring With 15 straight, knockouts in 15 professional starts, and lost a split decision to Benny (Kid) Paret of Cuba at St. Nicholas Arena in New York. At Providence, R.1., Willie Greene — an unbeaten but little known middleweight, stopped Saxton, the former two-time welterweight champion, in the third round. At Cleveland, middleweight contender Rory Calhoun came back and surprised with a unanimous decision over Jones, who had outpointed Rory at New York only three weeks ago. Lightly regarded J. D. Ellis, a Trenton, N.J., lightweight, upset Dupas of New Orleans at Ottawa, Ont., in a bout that was Ellis’ first 10-rounder. Ellis got the unanimous decision. Persley Upsets Lightbum At New Orleans, Arthur Persley —apparently a lightweight on the skids — won an upset split 10round verdict over highly-touted Lightbum of British Honduras. At Boston, middleweight Paul Pender — in his second bout after three years absence from the ring —Stopped Pete Adams of Newark, N.J. in the fourth round. Folley, third - ranked heavyweight contender, had to make it an eight-round exhibition with A3--vin Green at Odessa, Tex., because the promoter couldn’t raise enough money for their scheduled 10-round fight — even though the hat was passed. One the Calhoun-Jones supporting card at Cleveland, Lemar Clark—young heavyweight knockout artist from Cedar City, Utah —belted out two of three scheduled opponents but was unable to tackle the third because of a hand injury. He may have suffered a fracture.
Red Sox, Orioles Make Player Trade BOSTON (UPI)- — The Boston Red Sox, long known as one of the most reluctant traders of the American League, completed their third trade in less than two weeks when they dealt spare shortstop Billy Klaus to the Baltimore Orioles in return for outfielder Jim Busby Monday night. The straight player trade brought the pitcher-starved Red Sox their fifth outfielder to battle for the center field spot left vacant Dec. 2 when the outspoken Jimmy Piersall was traded to the Cleveland Indians. In return for Piersall Boston acquired veteran first baseman Vic Wertz and rookie outfielder Gary Geigef. In another. Dec. 2 transaction, the Red Sox traded spare catcher Lou Berberet to the Detroit Tigers for righthanded pitcher Herb Moford. Along with Busby and Geiger, the other Red Sox center field aspirants will be Gene Stephens. Marty Keough and Bill Renna. Ted Williams, of course, will be in left, while American League MVP Jackie Jensen will pgtrol right field.

Ford, the canny, left - handed curve-baller of the Yankees’ pitching staff, turned in a 2.01 earned run average that was certified as best in the league, while the right-handed Turley compiled the loop’s highest percentage, .750, by winning 21 games and losing only seven. Sidelined with a sore elbow for part of the season, the 31-year-old Ford still managed to fashion a 14-7 record and lead the league with seven shutouts. His .667 wonlost percentage was second only to Turley's. No one could touch Ford in the E. department. Southpaw Billy Pierce of the White Sox (17-11) was second with 2.68; lefthander Jack Harshman of the Orioles (12-15) third with 2.90; righthander Frank Lary of the Tigers (1615) fourth with 2.91, and southpaw Billy O’Dell of the Orioles (14-11) fifth with 2.97.
