urity office before payments can begin. 2. Q.—lsn’t it true that, regardless of whom I hire to do household work and pay SSO in cash wages in a calendar quarter, I must report these wages for social social security purposes? A.—Not quite. If you hire your child under age 21 or your parent or spouse at any age, the wages yau pay them are not covered by social security and should not be reported for social security purposes. 3. Q. —I understand that because I get the maximum monthly social security retirement benefit, SIOB.-

50, that this benefit will be automatically raised. When I get my January 1958 check, will it be for the new maximum, $127? A.—Your benefit will be automatically raised about 7% when you get your check for January next February. If you are receiving $108.50 now, your benefit will be raised to sll6. No one who is receiving retirement benefits now can possibly get the new maximum. This is because the new maximum is based on average monthly earnings of S4OO under social security. 4. Q. —I sold 2 acres of farm land. Can I count the income from the sale on my Schedule F i as farm income? a.—The income from the sale of loud is a capital gain not includable as ordinany income under social security. 5. Q. —I am receiving disability benefits from private insurance. Will this affect my disability benefits from social security? 4 —No. No other disability payments will affect disability ben--1 efits from social security. 6. Q. —I’m a farmer and make I about $2400 profit each year raising j crops. I spend the winter months from the end of November unitl early March in Florida. May I receive social security benefits for December, January and February? A.—Yes, assuming you are of retirement age and filed a claim for benefit payments, you could receive benefits any month you do not render substantial services in the operation of the farm. 7. Q. —What constitutes retirement for social security purposes so that I can be eligible for monthly benefits? A.—A worker is retired when his earnings during a calender year are SI2OO or less. A person age 72 or older can draw benefits regardless of his earnings. A worker is considered partially retired J and will receive benefits for some months in the year if his earnings for the year are between SI2OO and S2OBO or if he does not earn over SBO in some months. DULLES FLIES Continued from page one pact may depend on its ability to devise effective means of countering Russia's demand for the conversion of West Berlin into an undefended “free city” in the heart of Red Germany. So far, all that appears certain is that the Western powers wil reject the free city plan and insist on their right to station troops in the free-world outpost behind the Iron Curtain.
