The family made many short trjps tog; .her, including one along the Rhine river from Bonr. to Cologne, past castles, vineyards, and interesting sights. The last weeks the family spent together on a North Sea resort island. It was a wonderful trip, she concluded, and taught her to appreciate her own country as well as Germany. Miss Schultz then gave her viewpoint on boys’ clothes. She mentioned that most boys just wear blue jeans and a sweat shirt, which doesn't impress a girl very much, since they make boys look bowlegged because the pants are too tight. Certain color combinations also are worn in contrast with color rules. Plaids and stripes seem to clash, ialso. Boys who dress sloppily impress girls with the fact that they lack self-respect. Those who wear engineer’s boots often step on feet, proving that boots are too heavy, for school wear. Well-dressed boys impress girls with their self-respect and desire to please, she concluded. Friederici gave some different conceptions he has developed about Americans during his life. Before |he came to the U. S. he felt that i America was like a big brother, | strong and rich, helping Germany recover from World War 11. He 'thought that all Americans must Ibe rich, that they work for 20 years ;and then spend the rest of their . lives trying to spend it all. America | must be a land of unlimited opportunity, where any dishwasher can rise to become a millionaire. After he arrived in the U. S. he began to believe that the Americans had no family life at all. When the father arrives borne from work, the son is waiting for the car so he can have a date; the mother rushes dinner to get to her woman’s club meeting, and the father bolts his food so he can get to a meeting or watch TV. Even on the weekend nothing is done together. Americans have a wonderful attitude toward life, he discovered later. While they work hard at the office, when they get home they relax and enjoy what they have earned. In Germany many save all their life, and then leave their rfioney to taxes when they die. - Friederici had heard that school would be easy, and he would not have to study. DeVoss then spoke, with a suit-i case of “modern” clothes, compar- [ ing “conservative” boys clothes i with what the "cat” wears.
