Michael sold his previous location to the Citizens Telephone for the expansion planned by that firm. Michael’s is now open. FUNERALS HELD Continued from page one etery, where 22 of the children were to be buried, and to other cemeteries in the city and suburbs. There were no flowers, only a few green palms, inside the armory. Civic officials including Gov. William G. Stratton and Mayor Richard Daley joined the throng inside the church. Workers toiled through the night to finish the altar on the auditorium stage and to set up chairs and kneelers for the mourners. The only decoration in the dim interior was somber black and purple bunting as flowers are forbidden inside a Catholic church at funeral masses. Services for the three heroic nuns and five of the children who died in the fire were held Thursday. Archbishop Meyer celebrated the mass for the nuns also. In addition to the mass service at the armory, separate funeral masses were offered at various parish churches today for 30 of the other children killed in the fire. Services for at least 12 more will be held Saturday at parish churches and arrangements for the other 13 victims were not yet finalized. 400 State Highway Employes Laid Off Economy Move Made By Highway Head INDIANAPOLIS <UPI» — Between 350 and 400 maintenance workers were ordered laid off in the Indiana State Highway Department for the rest of the winter. Chairman John Peters issued the order and estimated the work force reduction would save the state $104,000 a month, leaving about 2,425 employes on the payroll. Fritz Ryan, highway personnel director, said the layoffs were the result of an economy move and lack of work during cold weather. “We’re trying to cut the pay-

roll,” Ryan said. “We’ve got to keep within the budget.” Both Ryan and Peters said the maintenance force would be increased when warm weather returns next spring. Ryan said v some” of the laid off workers would be jehired at that time. Peters said the layoff was ordered because most sub-districts failed to comply with a “request” to cut the force by Oct. 15. Ryan said politics was not involved because the laid off workers are “all good Republicans.” Furthermore, he said, they were personnel hired as “extra men for summer work.” AUER Go nll nu ed from paxe one discuss the problem. The public will be given an opportunity to submit questions before the meeting. Details of the program will be announced later, but every effort will be made to present as many facts as possible to enable the voters to make their own decisions. The general public is invited and tickets will go on sale early in January. Over 2,500 Daily Democrats are sold and delivered in Decatur each day.
