Hula hoops are not fun to everybody. Dutch builders are Complaining that the hula hoop fad is interfering with construction. It is diverting plastic from piping. o—o—Bishop Richard C. Raines, head of the Indiana Methodist church, is now visiting thousands of Korean children who have obtained free schooling the past five years, thanks to Indiana's 350,000 Methodists. —io——o— Unemployment claims this month in Indiana appear slightly less than a year ago. The picture is not yet as happy as we hope it soon will be, but let's all plan a merry Christmas with Christian generosity as our fore mo s t thought. Perhaps old-fashioned morality, which is also something new, with consideration for others as our theme, is an answer to recessions that we have not tried. o —o—— A plan for action concerning a state museum will be presented to the Indiana general assembly this year. It will be presented by a study commission chosen by the last legislature. This committee has concluded that Indiana has the worst facilities of any state in the union for its so-called “museum” — the dirty, dingy basement corridors of the state capitol building. If action is taken by this legislature, the building could be completed by 1963, in time for the celebration of our 150th year of statehood. The Indiana museum association, with no dues, has been formed to secure support for the project.

What effect will the new National Defense Educational Act have on the state of Indiana? What will it mean to local control of schools? In the first place, the act specifically states “Nothing contained in this act shall be construed to authorize any department, agency, officers, or employe of the United States to exercise any direction, supervision, or control over the curriculum, program of instruction, administration, or personnel of any educational institution or school system.” College students, under the new law, will be able to bora row up to SI,OOO a year, with a maximum of $5,000 to any one student. The student pays 3% interest, and the loan is to be repaid in 10 years. Congress has authorized $47 H million for the fiscal year ending next June 30 but only six million dollars have been appropriated. The money will be allocated to states on the basis of its percentage of full-time college students enrolled. The school concerned works out a loan agreement with the federal government, which puts up 90% of the loan fund, the institution putting up the rest. Preference must be granted to students who express a desire to teach, or have a superior capacity or preparation in science, mathematics, engineering, or a modern foreign language. There is a good bit more to the bill, and most of it is good, solid thinking. To anyone who takes the trouble to study it, it will prove to be considerably less than the great bogey that Sen. Jenner and others of his ilk made it out to be.

No articles will be | I published without signature of | | the author. O ■ — - ''' o W. C. T. U. Aims To the Editor: Our national, state and county presidents of the W. C. T. U. remind their members not to forget to thank any local or metropolitan paper for any recognition accorded us as in your recent editorial. Due to the work of Mrs. Niblick (president of Decatur’s local unit) and her co-workers, plus a notary, we, the Adams county workers now have the go-ahead sign for 1960. Boldly casting our net on the right side of the ship. Please excuse me, Mr. Editor, may I stir up the people’s pure minds, while we consider the three beasts symbolic of the three ma-' jor parties. The elephant denotes greet strength and a huge beast. Because of this great weight, he needs large feet. He also is a heavy drinker (water .that is). He likes to wade in. so he gets his feet muddy. In order to keep clean, he does what comes natural. He slings it. The mule was born stubborn, will not change. Time and tide will, but not the mule. What's good enough for Pop is O. K. by me. f The third beast is the dromedary. Not so well known in this country, would not win a beauty prize ever. But he is geared for long and hard travel through desert at miles per hour, through a, long and arduous day. When night comes, his owner hobbles his right foot, lest he decide to look for greener pastures., So the W. C. T. U. emulates the dromedary, and plans to leave its footsteps in the sands of time, for they w?ar a workman’s shoes. Our aim is to stop the awful carnage of blood on our highways, to save our nation’s greatest asset — our youth, and hope someday we will not have to meet the traffic head-on. We are told that alcohol is a: disease. If so, why bottle and sell it? , And though prophets have no honor in their own country, we: sign ourselves, as we leave our footprints in the sands of time, • simply, Workman’s Shoes, j Alice O. To Hold Reception At Concert Tuesday Gay Tyroliers In City Next Tuesday As an added feature of n,ext Tuesday’s concert by the Gay Tyroliers at the Youth and Community Center, the Adams county Civic Music association has announced a public reception will be held following the concert. The reception will afford the association members an opportunity to meet and converse with the Tyroliers. Refreshments will be served during the reception. Dressed in mountaineer clothes, the Gay Tyroliers sing, yodel, dance and engage in the traditional horseplay of their village green, recreating the legends, amatory adventures and ballads of the farmers, miners, woodcutters and bee r-drinkers—a homespun pattern of simple pleasures centuries old. The Tyroliers. although experienced artists who have performed in many parts of Europe and America, are still essentially Tyrolean villagers who dance and sing for the sheer joy of it. From the time they come on with their maypole until the final gesture of the slap dance, they give fine, substantial entertainment, the kind of simple entertainment which can only be provided by simple people doing what they love to do. The Tyroliers come from Kitzbuel in the Tyrol mountains of Austria, one of the few countries where folk songs and folk dances still form a natural part of the daily life of the people. During the long winter months the mountains and valleys are covered with snow, the roads are blocked and the peasants stay at home So it is that the Tyroliers pass away the time by singing and dancing their traditional songs and dances.
