The area of the flight deck on tile Navy’s newest aircraft carriers is about four acres. Wouldn’t that make a dandy garden? o o '■ Lower prices of eggs, pork, poultry and apples knocked food prices down one-half of one per cent this past month. Other goods and services went up about the same amount, so the cost of living is the same for the.third straight month. o o-— — The Decatur Chamber of Commerce had 100 more tickets printed for each run of the Saturday Santa Claus train, because of the tremendous demand for them. Adult tickets will also be available at the Chamber office. Another car was added to the train to hold the additional load. o- — ■ o It is interesting to note that Republican Eisenhower, just two years ago, received a 3,500 vote majority in this county. This year Democrat Vance Hartke received 2.400 votes more than his opponent. That either means that a tremendous number of voters stayed home, or that 2,950 voters switched tickets this time, or some combination of the two. o o Possibly a hundred farmers from Adams county will join Jay Gould on his Little Red Barn special this weekend to Chicago, where they will visit the International Livestock show’, horse show featuring Arthur Godfrey, and may attend the latest Cinerama spectacular, “South Sea Adventure.” More than 1,000 are expected to make the trip from this tencounty area. o o Automobiles today average 14 inches longer, five inches wider, seven inches lower, 375 pounds heavier, and 150 horsepower more

powerful than just ten short years ago in 1948. Yet your two-ton car must stop on a surface area of four tires touching hot pavement, only 125 square inches, slightly larger than your own two feet in size. High - speed throughways have increased the danger to the motorist who does not travel prepared for every emergency. o o Future shoppers may not carry their pocketbooks or push wheeled baskets through supermarkets, predicts Food Engineering, a McGraw-Hill publication. Instead, wives will punch out cards that activate a system that automatically delivers selected groceries from a stock room to the exit. Cards will be sent to banks that will handle food charge accounts. Maybe so. but it will destroy the housewife’s greatest right — the right to change her mind and put it back on the shelf. o o— Actually, the field men for the state board of accounts were quite pleased with all of the city and town records in Adams county, it has been learned. The errors found were all quite minor, and the examiners were quite surprised When they turned up on the state United Press International wire. Technical errors were the major source of trouble. For example, one of the errors pointed out was the hiring of a minor son of a town employe to do town work. It was not a question of whether he did the work, which he did. The state law reads that an employe is receiving pay for two jobs if the child is a minor. The town officials were quite unaware of the interpretation of the law that means the official is receiving double remuneration if his minor son accepts pay for work done. For the most part the records of Berne, Monroe, Geneva and Decatur were well-kept, accurate accounts.
