\Yellow Jackets Lose, 49-43, As Cardinals \Win Fifth Os Season

The Decatur Yellow Jackets fell behind a hard-running team of Geneva Cardinals and never could catch up, as they dropped a 49-43 decision Tuesday night on the Geneva floor. The Jackets had the lead only once during the game, and while they tied it up several times, couldn’t shake the bad-pass jitters long enough to go into the lead. The Cardinals jumped into a quick lead behind the red-hot shooting of Charles Hoffman. Hoffman hit on his first four attempts from the field to spark Geneva to an early 8-4 lead. Decatur came bac£ with two fielders by Larry Daniels to tie the count at 8-8, and Jim Gay dropped in a free throw to give the Jackets their only lead. A goal tending basket got the Cardinals back ahead, and they stayed there the rest of the way. At the end of the quarter, Geneva held a scant 13-11 edge. Decatur dropped behind by six, 19-13, early' in the second stanza, but Daniels and Steve Dellinger each hit a pair from the field to offset another Hoffman bucket and tie the score at 21-21. The Jackets tied it up for the last time. 23-23, but the Cardinals pulled away to lead at the half. 29-24. Both teams had poor third quarters in a stanza marked by bad

[ passing. The Jackets managed . seven points against six for the I boys from the south end of the [ county, and cut orie point off their i lead, 31-35, at the three-quarter . mark. , Geneva tried to make a rout of the last period, as they burst , into a nine-point, 31-40 lead, their biggest of the game. Bob Shraluka, Decatur’s leading scorer for the season, took over the Jacket offense then, as the Cardinals made the mistake of trying to slow the game down. A tight Decatur defense repeatedly took the ball away from Geneva, and Shraluka scored nine straight points against two for the Cardinals, to cut the lead to 42-40. The Jacket defense got a little too tight here, and Geneva started. te build up their winning margin at the freethrow line. It was the second loss against two wins for Decatur, and Geneva’s fifth straight win. The Jackets next game will be against the Bears at Berne, Friday night, and the Cardinals will play at Bryant, also on Friday night.
