HAPPY THANKSGIVING Thanksgiving is a wonderful holiday. It is the day when Americans thank God for the bountiful harvest of the year. In eras past, that harvest was one of the fields, the crops so necessary for comfortable living through the harsh winter ahead. In this modern day and age when progress has taken many of us away from the fields, the harvest is a harvest of small happenings that go together to make a comfortable life, full of pleasant relationships. The smile of a proud new mother; the feel of a child’s warm hand in yours as you walk together; the comfortable silence with a good friend where words are not necessary to exchange a warmth and understanding; the thrill of a touchdown, a basket, or a home run by your son; the elation over the success of a friend; the anticipation on children’s happy faces at Christmas time; the memory of the sharp crack of a gun while hunting, or the tug of a fighting fish; the glow of comfort from church services; the happiness in the last minutes before bedtime, as a youngster sits on your lap, both of you knowing tomorrow will be another exciting day; these little things are our harvest of today. America is known for big things. Great universities, giant strides in science, magnificent buildings, roads and industries, beautiful homes and powerful automobiles are all a part of the American scene. Still, it is the yearly harvest of little things, half remembered sensations of happiness that ipake- all the big things fit into the overall picture, kept in their proper perspective by the little enjoyments of life. In his land of plenty we have much to be grateful for at Thanksgiving, and let us never forget or take for granted the harvest of little memories, the .wonderful experiences of everyday living—for these, we are thankful.
