Warns On Danger Os Narcotic Addiction Health Professions Warned By Authority; By DELOS SMITH DPI Science Editor NEW YORK (UPD—A seldommentioned fact of life (outside professional circles) is that some doctors, nurses, and druggists become narcotic addicts, since they have easy access to narcotics. It is mentioned here because all those professionals have had a new, forceful warning of the personal tragedy which awaits anyone who falls into the narcotic trap. The warner. Dr. Edward R. Blooinquist, of the College of Medical Evangelists, Los Angeles estimated that this terrifying menace of narcotic addiction every year subtracts enough members from the medical profession to fill the annual graduating class of one of the nation’s largest medical schools. The physician’s chief defensive weapon against this professional danger is, he said, “an awareness of the personal hazard involved in misuse of narcotics and the ease with which addiction can occur.” A doctor who really understands the problem and is practical enough to recognize his human frailty seldom if ever gets addicted, he said. Scorn for Narcotics But "ego is a powerful thing,’ he continued, “and members of the medical profession exhibit one reason for addiction that should never exist among intelligent people—a personal scorn I for narcotics and a desire to prove to themselves or others that they can personally utilize ithem without detriment.” While it is true, statistically, I that most addicts are “slumbred” and have criminal records, i addicts can come from any social 1 class, he said, and “once addiction begins, the doctor begins to reason as any other addict does in time of stress. He loses his sense of responsibility. He becomes withdrawn and thinks in logic-tight compartments. Physically, morally and spiritually he moves into the gutter, elbowing his way into a society of felons.” I No matter the background pf addicts, they all “fear pain, whether physical or psychologic, i Heredity, environment or both I have given them an insecure ego; which frequently leaves them shy! and diffident.” AU may be well with them untU they discover that narcotics can give them “a synthetic feeling of security.”
