THE DECATUR DAILY DEMOCRAT, DECATUR, INDIANA
Early Christinas Mailing Campaign Volume Record Is Foreseen This Year Postmaster Leo Kirsch said today, "Christmas may seem quite away off, but nevertheless, we’re starting our annual 'Mail Early For Christmas’ campaign immediately, because there’s every indication that the 1958 Christmas season will set an all time mailing record.” The postmaster said further, “right now is the time to plan your Christmas card and gift mailings.
The first thing to do is to check your Christmas card list very carefully—make sure that each address includes full name, street and number, city, zone and state.” He went on to stay that by a little advance planning, a lot of headaches can be avoided when the Christmas rush is on. The postmaster suggests “you stock up now on heavy wrapping paper, sturdy corrugated cartons, strong cord, and paper adhesive tape, for use in securely packing and wrapping your Christmas gifts. Remember, also, that you can include your Christmas card or letter inside your gifts parage if you’ll just add the appropriate first class mail stamps to the postage for the .package itself.” The postmaster also suggests
that patrons secure from the post office pamphlet No. 2, which gives full information about proper packaging and wrapping of parcels for mailing. “When you call for the pamphlet, be sure to buy sufficient postage stamps for your cards and gifts.” The Post Office also has free labels which read, “All for local delivery” and “All' for out of town delivery," so.that “before you mail your Christmas cards you can sort them into two groups, with the addresses all facing one way, thus expediting delivery. “Be sure to use only first class four cent, or seven cent air mail postage on your Christmas cards. All cards sent by first class mail may include a personal handwrit*ten message, whereas a signature only is authorized on cards that are mailed at the three cent, third class rate.” The postmaster says it’s especially important to include return address on every Christmas card envelope. “Besides being socially correct, this is a big help to both ybu and your friends in keeping your mailing lists up-to-date.” Through the fine cooperation of the public during recent years, Kirsch reports that great progress has been made in getting the Christmas mails through on time. He is making many advance preparations to handle the 1958 Christmas mail rush, with extra mail clerks, carriers, and expanded facilities all around. Speaking further about his plans, the postmaster said, “With over 170.000,000 people in the U. S. A. today, that means more Christmas mail than ever before, and that's why the post office needs your help in planning your Christmas mailings well in advance.” Christmas cards and gifts for most distant points should be mailed first, preferably well before December 10, and those for nearby points should be mailed by December 15, or at least a week before Christmas. 24 Miles To Go PLANKINTON, S. D. (UPD— The South Dakota Highway Commission has been asked to complete a 24-mile stfetch of road that will make U.S. 281 completely hardtopped from Canada to Mexico. South Dakota also has been asked to name the highway the American Legion Memorial Highway. It has received that designation from the legislatures of all the other state through which the 1,805-mile route travels.
