Many Os Top Prep Quintets To See Action INDIANAPOLIS (UPI) The new Indiana high school basketball campaign swings into high gear this week when three of the four 1958 state tourney finalists, including defending champion Fort Wayne South, plus Fort Wayne Central and South Bend Central risk their high-powered reputations. However, the full impact of the new season won’t be felt until the first week in December. By then, the "Hoosier Madness” will be in complete charge up and down the state. South’s Archers are hurting. They lost 4 starters via the graduation a. route, including 7-foot Mike McCoy who enrolled at Northwestern, and 6-4 Tom Bolyard is out for several weeks with a fractured hand. Don Reichert has three other varsity holdovers—Nick Demetre, Bill Meyer and Mike Simmonsplus Ken Howe and Ted Lebrecht. Sub-Center Dave Barrett, like Bolyard, stands 6-4 and Reichert isn't exactly downhearted as he prepares for Friday's opener at Bluffton. “We have a big job ahead of us,” he said, “but if one or two boys come through, we will be better than a lot of people think.” Bonham Only a Junior Reichert figures South will jell by Jan. 15, about five weeks before the state tourney opens. Muncie Central and Crawfordsville, also state- finalists last March, likewise open Friday. Muncie will be minus two regulars when it opens against Hagerstown — Butch Joris and

Monmouth at Hoagland. Montpelier at Geneva.. > Hartford at Bryant. Saturday Leo at Berne. Charley Hinds—but 6-4 Ron Bonham, one of the best pivotmen in the state last yeari is just a junior, and Dave Hofheinz and Bernie Anderson are also back plus several other experienced hands. Coach John Longfellow said Muncie has the potential for another fine quintet but worried over "lousy defense.” Crawfordsville, like Springs Valley a major surprise last time, entertains Greencastle Friday with only Bill Burget back from his tourney quintet. The Athenians are a big question mark this year, said coach Dick Baumgartner. Coalmon is Back South Bend Central, 17-3 last season, hosts Fort Wayne Central <l6-3) in Saturday’s top game. The South Benders, fresh from a perfect football season and winning the mythical state title, tied for the East NIHSC crown last year. They still have 6-4 Sylvester Ooalmon. who played on the Bears’ 1957 state championship club and who apparently has recovered from a knee operation which sidelined him last February. The Fort Wayne Tigers are loaded with talent, including three holdover regulars, but will miss jumping Johnny Kelso when they open at Anderson Friday. Also upstate, Valparaiso has four starters back when it opens against Clown Point Saturday, but Lafayette andLogansport of the North Central Conference are young. At La f a ye 11 e, Marion Crawley lost all his starters. In fact, he lost 9 of his first 12 players. Jim Jones’ only regular back at Logansport is 5-9 Bill Cuppy. Lafayette opens at Lebanon Friday, Logansport at home against Winamac. Fort Wayne Catholic, another likely toughie, opens at Kendallville Friday.
