the basement can be fun, for it might include some elementary detective work. You see, the handy place you choose upstairs, off the cuff, may lead your chute to the furnace. So do some detecting with a blueprint or measuring tape first. Once having selected the right location, saw out a section of flooipng and sub-flooring between the joists. Your chute can most easily be prefabricated and made in two sections — one extending from the

basement ceiling to a handy height in the closet, and the other leading from the ceiling to a point over a receiving basket, box or table below. So that the soiled laundry will have smooth, uninterrupted sailing to the basement, put your chute framing on the outside. This will consist of straight 1 by 2-inch lumber. Two pieces are used at each exterior corner of the elongated box, with the smooth-surfaced Masonite ’A” Presdwood, used for the sides, nailed to the wood and the wood strips railed to each other. The splinter - free Presdwood makes an ideal surfacing for the chute. Its smooth side should face in, the textured side out. Cutouts in the floor should be made to accommodate the outside framing of the chute. Install the lower portion of the chute first, nailing it to the floor joists. The upper section, wedged in the floor hole, m£y need no further support. To dress up the edges of the opening, fill in the space between the chute’s corners with lx2-inch lumber at the floor level. Top (this kickstrip with quarter round molding to discourage the collection of dust. In the closet section of the chute, either sand the wood framing thoroughly so 1 it won’t snag garments or simply nail over the framework another layer of the splinter-free hardboard. Make a hinged top for the chute by framing a piece of the Presdwood so the wood fits inside the chute opening. Attach a door pull and the job will be completed. TIN CAN HOLDS DRILL A large tin can open at both ends nailed to your work bench acts as a handy holder for an electric drill. Color Can Disguise Home’s Bad Features jColor properly u§ed on the outside of a house can accentuate its good features and disguise its bad ones. 7 An example of this often cited by successful color stylists ij color on the roof. A light shade of asphalt shingles on a small house tends to make it look bigger. The reverse is true when a dark shade of asphalt shingles, such as a deep green, is applied on a tall, awkward house. This makes the house look lower, with its height in better proportion to its width. SPRAYING SAVES LABOR Masking tape, a few newspapers, and a good quality spray gun make paintirig storm windows and doors easier and faster. Tape the newspapers carefully over both sides of the glass or screen, and spray away. A garage with the door left open makes a good spray “booth.” Door, Window Units Save Building Dollars ,One way to save time and money in building or remodeling a house is with door and window “units” that come from the factory with frame and door or frame and sash assembled and ready to install. This saves greatly on labor costs, since the unit can be nailed into the door or window opening in a matter of minutes. These units, made of ponderosa pine, are available from building material dealers in many stock styles and sizes.

Presdwood Offers Many Uses On Farm The farmer who keeps on hand a few 4’ x 8’ panels of Masonite Farm Board, often called quarterinch Tempered Presdwood, knows the great versatility of this material for countless repairing, remodeling and building purposes. Often described as “the wonder wood of 1000 uses,” Tempered Presdwood has innumerable uses on the farm, where it serves at low cost and for long periods. With it. the tarmer can construct animal feeders, .buildings of almost any type, and a variety of other improvements which will make his work easier and his operations more profitable. Presdwood: Wood Improved What is Farm Board, or Presswood? As described by the manufacturer, Masonite Corporation, it is “wood improved. It is a strong hard, dense panel material made of wood, but better than wood It keeps out rain, wind, sun and snow It lasts indefinitely, resists dents and scratches. Having no grain. Presdwood will not split, splinter or crack. Its smooth surface is sanitary and easy to keep clean." Outlined here are a few handy uses for Masonite Farm Board around the farm. A fine introductory idea is a new workbench top to cover the old one which may be splintered and uneven. By simply fastening the new top with nails or screws, the farmer will have an A-l workbench .top of the type used widely in industry. For Grain Bin Liners What about grain bin liners? Sur-
plus grain can be stored if, the bin —or building used in an emergency for storage — first is lined with tight-fitting panels that keep moisture out. ~ Sagging doors that won’t close properly are a nuisance, hazard and eyesore. After truing the door, the farmer can nail on a new surface of Tempered Presdwood. The panel will wear well and will serve i also to hold the door in shape. Wagon boxes used for hauling grain or other purposes will stay smooth and easy to work on if covered with this smooth-surfaced panel. Shoveling against a surface of this non-splintering material is ’’duck soup” compared with pushing a shovel on an uneven or splintered wooden floor. Every farm needs storage bins. Using these versatile panels for walls or dividers, backed by simple lumber framing, the farmer can create whatever bins he needs to make his work easier. They may be quickly assembled. Heating Costs Can Be Cut • By Insulation “The cost of heating an uninsulated house is as much as three times the cost of heating the fully-insulated house,” says the National Electric Manufacturers in its Manual for Electric House Heating. □ “From the standpoint of economy,” the manual points? out, “it is fust as important to insulate walls, ceilings, and floors in order to keep the heat in as it is to insulate an electric refrigerator to keep heat out.” The manual, published as a basic guide for designing electric heating installations, says that proper insulation is recommended for all electrically-heat-ed homes, regardless of their location or the electric heating method used. In many areas across the country where electric utility rates are low, electricity is rapidly becoming a standard heating fuel for homes. One reason for this is that experiments have shown that a nouse thickly insulated with mineral wool can be heated with electricity in these areas at costs comparable with other forms of fuel. Current recommendations for insulation in an electricallyheated house are a 6-inch thickness of mineral wool in the ceiling, 4 inches in walls, and at least 2 inches in an unheated floor. The electric heating manual adds that when proper insulation is installed, “the savings incurred are usually enough to pay for the original cost of the insulation within a few years.”. A further advantage of insulating a house for electric heating is that the recommended thicknesses of mineral wool, are the same as those suggested for economical central air conditioning. Thus a house insulated for electric heating is ready for air conditioning at any time. Meanwhile, the thick mineral wool helps keep the house more comfortable in summer without artificial cooling.
Pigeonhole Shelves Solve Storage Problem For miscellaneous storage, pigeonhole shelves are ideal in closets, on worktables and in storage cabinets. They allow simple classifications, such as mittens, scarves, caps, purses and vacuum cleaner attachments. The only tool needed for constructing these useful shelves is a crosscut saw, or an equivalet power saw. when the craftsman uses Masonite ¥<” Tempered Presdwood to form the pigeonholes. He does this by sawing quarter-inch slots in the panels after they have been cut to fit the space reserved for them on a shelf or table. Slots then are fitted together, as in eggcrate construction. No wood framing members are required, as the pigeonhole shelving is self-sup-porting. A free plan detailing the construction may be obtained by sending a postal card to the Home Service Bureau. Suite 2037. 11l W. Washington St., Chicago 2. 111., and requesting Plan No. AE-337. Wood Cabinets Add Beauty to Kitchens Kitchen cabinets of ponderosa pine are available in many styles and sizes, including some models with fronts of birch or other hardwoods. These cabinets make it possible for families who are building or remodeling a home to have kitchens decorated in the rich beauty of natural wood tones. Good Thick Insulation Top-Notch Investment Two reasons good insulation is among the best investments a home owner can make are: 1. Mineral wool can’t wear out and needs no maintenance. It will last as long as the house itself. 2. Thick insulation pays for itself in a few years with savings on heating fuel. After that, the savings become clear profit to the home owner.

GARBAGE CANS ON WAY OUT Passing out of the American scene is the unsightly, unsanitary trash can with its attendant stray dogs and cats, according to “Today’s Home” Magazine. It states that the modern incinerator made for home use is odorless, quiet, and efficient. It will burn practically anything in the way of refuse but metal or glass, and cam be installed right in the kitchen. UPHOLSTERED BATHROOMS? Ventilation and vapor control by use of fans instead of windows have made upholstered furniture feasible in the bathroom, says "Today's Home” Magazine.
