lowa's Coach Is Fighting Team Letdown IOWA CITY, lowa (UPI) — Coach Forest Evashevski, headmaster of lowa’s Big Ten champions, fought the "letdown” battle today in hopes of keeping his lofty Hawkeyes "high” for Saturday’s game with Ohio State. lowa cinched the Big Ten title and a Rose Bowl bid by whipping Minnesota, 28-6, Saturday and that means the Hawks might have a tendency to falter against Ohio State Saturday and Notre Dame Nov. 22. But Evashevski has at least two things working for him in his efforts to keep lowa sharp. First, mdny of the Hawkeyes remember what Ohio State, especially its thunderous fullback Bob White, did to their championship dreams last season. lowa was about seven minutes away from winning its second straight title and was leading Ohio State, 13-10. at Columbus midway in the fourth quarter last Nov. 16. The Buckeyes started feeding the ball to White and he blasted out most of the gains in a touchdown drive of about 75 yards. White scored from 5 yards out with 3:53 minutes left in the game and Ohio State, instead of lowa, won the’championship. White will, be back for this year’s clash in lowa stadium here. But also around again this season are a number of lowa returnees who would delight in giving White, the Big Ten’s leading rusher, his worst afternoon of the season. The other incentive working Jar Evashevski la the national pr zn-

inence, and possibly No. 1 ranking, the Hawkeyes will attract if they close their season undefeated by whipping Ohio State and Notre Dame. lowa, now boasting five wins and a 13-13 Air Force tie, slipped from No. 1 to No. 2 in the United Press International college ratings this week. Quarterback Randy Duncan, an i All America candidate, and his fleet teammates have shown great poise this fall. This confidence and savvy could carry lowa through in a close battle. But Evashevski isn’t counting on it. He said it was “hard to convince the people and the squad” that the season is not; over yet. "We better get off the cloud j and back to terra firm a,” he said. “We’ve got a fight on our hands.” Eddie Perkins Wins Over Frankie Ryff CHICAGO fUPD — Lightweight Frankie Ryff, his championship j hopes shattered by speedy Eddie Perkins, shrugged off blistered feet and a possible broken hand ; today and said he had no plans to ; abandon his drcam of some day j winning a boxing crown. “I’ve got no alibis for losing,” j he said, "he beat me. I wasn’t as shifty as I usually am, and when you know you’ve got a bad hand, well, maybe you don’t punch the way you usually do.” Ryff, who lost for the sixth time in 33 fights, wasn’t, effective against Perkins, a Chicagoan making his first TV appearance. The New Yorker-was floored for a two count by a right hook in the second round and his handlers blamed the defeat on that mishap. “It wasn’t a knockdown,” his manager, Barney Ross, his trainer, Whitey Bimstein, and Ryff himself said. "He got caught with a sucker punch after a lead and slipped at the same time.” But referee Frank Sikora, who gave Perkins a 45-44 edge in scoring. and Perkins’ camp had no! doubt of the event. "It was a good right hook.” Perkins said, "except it was just a little high on the head.” It was a unanimous decision for Perkins as judge John Bray scored it 47-44 for the winner and judge Billy Doty 47-43 for Perkins. Both fighters weighed 138 pounds, but Perkins gave away height and reach.
