Six-Point Program Offered By Benson Secretary Speaks To National Grange GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (UPI- ; Secretary of Agriculture Ezra Taft Benson today offered a six-point program of “things we need" to ‘ solve the nation’s agriculture problems. Benson, in an address before the 92nd annual national convention of the National Grange, said the major problems facing agriculture today are: > —Marketing the biggest output by far of farm products in all our history. —Long range difficulties arising out of a technological revolution in agriculture, —Problems arising from heavy investment of capital and high costs of farming operations. Benson said the solutions to these problems are: 1. Sound price and acreage programs. 2. Effective measures to cut down surpluses and to aid in production adjustment. 3. New and expanded markets at home and abroad. 4. Continued emphasis on lowercost. higher-quality production. 5. Alternative crops. 6. Bigger, stronger, more aggressive farmer cooperatives. Benson said the Eisenhower administration has made some “real progress” in price and acreage programs “but we still i need sound legislation for some of the basic crops.” He said the government hopes to include an additional 14 million acres of cropland under the soil bank program next year or a total of about 24 million acres whidh should help reduce surpluses. JUDGE (Continued from page one) house bell summoned the lawyers daily to the court room for the reading of the docket, which is now done only once a term. Tfiie nominating committee will i report on a slate of officers for J the coming year. I ■ . GERMANY (Continued from page one) His statement went far beyond i the one by Soviet Premier Nikita ; Khrushchev Monday night touching off the present crisis. Khrushchev said Russia was withdrawing ' from the agreement and turning • its role over to Communist East 1 Germany. i The Communist government, in ; a major effort to win recognition from the West, moved swiftly. Loch stated flatly the Western i Allies must “get out of Berlin.” AOTICE OP WMIMSTItVHOV Emtatr Xo, I In t’he Adams Circuit Court of Adams County, Indiana. Notice is hereby given that HOIIEKT S. Three Truck Drivers Injured In Wreck EDINBURG, Ind. (UPD — Damage was estimated at $35,000 in a rear-end collision of three trucks here Tuesday and injured drivers from three states. Hurt were Waymon Bruner, 36, Highland; Harold Skinner,■ 38, Toulon, 111., and Charles Schanding, 40, Florence, Ky. ASSEMBLY (Continued from page one) last month reached agreement covering 65,000 production workers across the country. No settlement was reached then for the 8,000 of Chrysler’s 80,000 salaried workers covered by the UAW. The strike was called when another month of bargaining failed to produce agreement, with the talks still deadlocked over three major issues — wages inequities, wage progression raises and area wide seniority. The union attempted to place the blame for closing the assembly plants on the company. Salaried workers picket lines were ordered wit hd raw n at shift changes to allow production workers to report without crossing picket lines. Ignore UAW Order However, some salaried workers refused to heed the UAW order and remained picketing all day Tuesday. Chrysler truck drivers, who deliver parts from plant to plant in the Detroit area, also would not cross picket lines, creating shortages at key factories. The UAW said the strike would not affect Chrysler's defense operations, including an Army missile plant near Detroit and a tank facility in Delaware. The only two assembly plants operating. Tuesday were at Newark, Del., and Los Angeles. The Newark plant p rod uc e s Plymouths and Dodges and the Los Angeles plant Plymouths, Dodges, De Sotos and Chryslers. The plants employ 3,400. The plants closed down included the Imperial assembly plant, the Dodge truck assembly plant the Plymouth body and assembly plants and the Jefferson assembly plant, all in Detroit, and the Plymouth body and assembly plants in Evansville, Ind. The shutdowns at all except by the Jefferson plant were caused by refusal of truck drivers to cross the picket lines. At the Jefferson plant, 3,000 production workers went out for lunch and did not return. Highland Park engineering was the largest striking white collar unit with 2.043 engineers and clerical workers. TRAFFIC (Continued frotn one) U. S. 50 near Versailles. Walter L. Lowe. 12. Sullivan, killed in a bicycle-car collision on U. S. 41 near Sullivan. As of last Sunday midnight, fatalities were running between 11 and 12 per cent lower than last year. The state was 136 fatalities away from its I.oooth traffic death and officials estimated the big round figure would be reached about the middle of next month at the present rate. The I,oooth death was recorded in mid-No-vember last year. The state death toll has climbed over the 1,000 mark every year since 1946. Efforts to drop it below the mark appear improbable because of increased population, and the greater number of vehicles traveling more miles on the highways. Only 25 traffic deaths were recorded last week. That was a decided improvement over the same week in 1957 when 34 persons lost I their lives on Indiana streets and roads.
Theft Os $300,000 Sapphire Reported Former Accounting Firm Head Robbed SCRANTON, Pa. (UPD — Authorities Tuesday disclosed the theft of a $300,000 sapphire and $400,000 in non-negotiable securities from a small safe in the home of Edward A. Muldowney, former head of mt accounting firm. The robbery was discovered Oct, 28 when Muldowney returned from a month’s stay in St. Mary’s Hospital: He reported the theft immediately but a teletype message on the burglary was sent only Tuesday. No reason was given for the delay. Muldowney said he picked up the sapphire, which is about the size of a dime, during a, trip to India some years ago. ' Muldowney said the star sapphire ordinarily would be worth about $33,000 on the jewel market, but its value as a collector’s item was far in excess of its intrinsic worth.
