Social Security Quiz Answers Many Queries

(Editor'a note: Da you have any questions about Social Becurity? We all do, don’t we* Send any question you might have to Social Security Quiz, c/o Daily Democrat. You'll find your answer in this column, which i> published each Saturday. I 1. I am a disabled veteran and have been rated 100% disabled by the Veterans Administration. Will this rating satisfy the medical requirements for payment of disability insurance benefits under tile Social Security Act? Not necessarily. The fact that you are rated disabled by the Veterans Administration will not automatically mean you meet the definition of disability set out in the Social Security Act. Each case must be considered individually under the terms of the Social Security law to determine if all previous work and all disability requirements in the Social Security Act are satisfied. 2. I am a widow, age 63. My husband worked for many years under social security until his death in 1953. I collected a lump-sum at that time and was told that I could qualify for monthly payments when I became 65. I’ve heard th at this law was changed. Yes. The entitlement age for widows who have not remarried has been reduced to age 62. You ririay qualify for the full amount of widow's payment which was formerly not payable until age 65, 3. I applied for my social security when I became 65 and started receiving the minimum benefit of S3O per month. Since that time II have had to have some of my j checks stopped because I worked ( and earned over SI2OO per year. I am now going to stop work altogether. Will the earnings I have had, my claim, able me to draw higher benefits? Yes, they most likely will. You should call at your social security office six iponths after the last year in which you earn over SI2OO. If the amount of your benefits can be increased, the social security people will be glad to see that tlys is done. 4. Because of my physical condition, I may have to apply for disa* bility benefits under the social security program even though I am only 56 years old. Would the amount payable to me be reduced because I am under 65? — Disability benefits are not reduced. If you are entitled to disability benefits, the amount you receive each month would be the same as the amount of old : age insurance benefits you would receive if you were age 65 at this time; It will be based on the record of your wages and can be as little as S3O per month or as much as $108.50 per month. 5. My husband is receiving monthly social security payments. I understand that I can apply when I am 62 this November and receive wife’s benefits but that they will be smaller than if I wait until I

am 65. Would I be ahead if I apply when I am 62 or if I wait uqtil , lam 65? The amount payable to you on your husband’s wage record will be reduced if you apply for wife’s benefits between the age of 62 and 65. The amount of reduction depends cn the number of months between the time payments start and the time you reach 65. This reduction is permanent and would amount to 25% if you apply at age 62. It would be less if you wait until you were nearer 65. If you choose the reduced benefit at any age between 62 and 65, you will be ahead for the first 12 years. However, if you receive wife benefits at the reduced rate for more than 12 years, the total amount you receive will not be as large as if you had waited until age 65 for the higher benefit. The decision is yours. 6. I am receiving social security
