Ranking Teams Facing Rough Tilts Saturday By FRED DOWN United Press International Syracuse attempts to* take a stronger grip on a Cotton or Orange Bowl bid when it opposes dangerous Boston University tonight in a game that starts a weekend schedule which promises trouble for several of the Nation’s top 10. Syracuse, ranked 12th in the country, is a 12 - point favorite over thrice-beaten BU but Terrier Coach Steve Sinko believes his underdogs can spring an upset on the strength of a backfield that has strong power to the outside. BU turned in its best effort of the season last Saturday when it scored a 33-7 victory over William and Mary. The other bowl hopefuls, national powers and the two remaining unbeaten and untied major teams all see action Saturday. These games include important struggles in the Big Ten, the Big Eight and the Pacific Coast Conference plus such attractive intersectional pairings as Army vs. Rice and Mississippi vs. Houton. LUS Over Duke Rutgers, unbeaten untied and unranked, is a solid favorite to win its seventh straight game against Lafayette Saturday afternoon and Louisiana State, the country’s other unbeaten and untied major team, is a 13-point pick over Duke in a Saturday night game. LSU, ranked second after its 14-0 victory over Mississippi, is the leading candidate for the Southeastern Conference’s lucrative Sugar Bowl bid. lowa, ranked No. 1, could wrap up the Big Ten’s Rose Bowl invitation although it would take an unlikely combination of circumstances. The Hawkeyes are 17% point favorites over Minnesota but can’t clinch the bowl bid unless Wisconsin upsets Northwestern and Ohio State upsets Purdue. Northwestern is a evenpoint pick and Purdue is a 1%point choice. Sootoers Lopsided Favorites Oklahoma, ranked No. 5, is a lopsided choice to run its unbeaten streak in the Big Eight to 69 games when it meets lowa State. Colorado is rated three points over Missouri against which Oklahoma figures to clinch the conference title and Orange Bowl bid on Nov. 15. Oregon State, which took over thp Pacific Coast Conference lead last Saturday is favored over Washington State and California, still in the running for the title, is rated 13 points over UCLA in the big Far West games. Army,. No. 3, will throw its sav-
iride-anckoutaide ground attack at a Rice team which hopes to gain the Cotton Bowl bid and will be fighting to uphold the "honor” of the Southwest Confer•nc e. Mississippi, rebounding from the LSU shock, is an equally strong favorite against Houston. Irish Over Pitt Auburn, No. 4 but needing a “big win” to claim national honors, is a seven-point pick over Mississippi State; Notre Dame is rated four points over a powerful Pittsburgh team which has only a so-so 4-2-1 record but is a match for any college team in the land; Texas Christian will run up the score on over - matched Marquette; 16th-ranked Orange-or-Gator bowl aspirant North Carolina is 17% points over Virginia and Clemson, ranked No. 18 and a strong contender for the Orange Bowl, is a four-point underdog to Georgia Tech, in other key games. i Alabama is a one •> point pick over Tulane and Florida State is fevered by a half - point over Miami (Fla.) in tonight’s other major games. Packers End Put On Injured Reserve List ; GREEN BAY, Wis. (UPI) —The Green Bay Packers have placed end Gary Knafel on'the injured reserve list for the rest of the season. Knafel will undergo surgery for a pinched cartilage in his right knee that “should make him ready for next season.” I r

Successful Hunting Trip Is Concluded The Rev. Lawrence Norris, of Syracuse, and formerly of Decatur, Rollie Crozier, and J. O. Tricker, of Decatur, returned Thursday evening from a successful hunting trip in Canada. The group reported that during the four-day hunt, they shot seven deer and one moose weighing 1,000 pounds.
