A Peiping broadcast tended to bear out Nationalist appraisal. The Communists, who broke their own cease fire during a John Foster Dulles visit to Taipei, claimed partial credit for what they called the “utter defeat” of the Republicans in Tuesday’s elutions.
The Communist New China News Agency said the Republican Party “claimed boastfully" that the original cease fire announced by Peiping was a result of its foreign policy. “They alleged that the ‘tough’ policy of the U.S. government had : brought ‘peace’ and “relaxed’ the , tension in the Taiwan (Formosa) Strait," Peiping said. “This point! was stressed by Eisenhower and!; Nixon in their election speeches an effort to show that the present . ‘no shooting’ was the ‘merit’ of 1 the Republican foreign policy.’ But when the shelling was re- ' sumed two weeks ’later, the Com- ' munists said, “the Republican attempt to capitalize on the temporary suspension of shelling was completely smashed.’ The Nationalist Defense Ministry reported, meanwhile, that ito Quemoy artillery destroyed 13 Communist guns W e d nesd< y, bringing toe week’s total to 30 Red guns. It also reported the destruction of a Communist ammunition dump, eight gun positions and five bunkers. Johnson’s list is understood to include, in addition to bills cited by Rayburn, legislation to relieve depressed areas (such a bill was vetoed this year by Eisenhower); broaden water conservation and irrigation programs; expand construction of jet-age airports; accelerate exploration of space; and bolster the atoms-for-peace program.

Democrat Hopefuls Refreshed By Win Presidential Hopes Ride With Congress WASHINGTON (UPD — A refreshed crop of Democratic presidential prospects came out of Tuesday’s elections, and their chances may be determined by the record of the 86th Congress. One of their number. Senate Democratic Leader Lyndon B. Johnson of Texas, will be a key figure In shaping the political destinies of all—as well as the record on- which they must stand in 1960. Johnson has been a consistent advocate of “constructive, responsible, moderate” Democratic action. But he has shown he can interpret that philosophy to include make-work spending like that of his New Deal days as well as middle-ground compromising on such issues as civil rights. Friends concede - Johnson may have more trouble keeping party harmony in a Senate which has 62 Democrats instead of 49. But he is reported ready to come up with a strong program of legislative action covering most of the points liberal Democratic colleagues will be demanding. “Compromise” Candidate Because of the Democrats’ split on civil rights Johnson’s chances of getting his party's presidential nomination — assuming he wants it—are tied to his appeal as a “compromise” candidate plus his record as a “can do” leader in Congress. But the presidential aspirations of others will come a lot closer to the surface in the Senate and in various state capitals in the next two years. High on the list are Democratic Sens. John F. Kennedy of Massachusetts and Stuart Symington of Missouri, both of whom won smashing victories on Tuesday. It includes Democratic Sens. Hubert H. Humphrey of Minnesota, and Albert Gore and Estes Kefauver, both of Tennessee. Democratic Sen.-elect Edmund S. Muskie of Maine, a newcomer, also must be counted as a potential candidate for the future.
California’s governor - elect, Democrat Edmund G. Brown, brings a new prospect into the presidential arena. Brown, like Michigan’s Gov. G. Mennen Williams, who won his sixth term this week, may find his political horoscope altered by what Johnson and House Speaker Sam Rayburn get through the new Congress. Meyner Strong Possibility New Jersey's Gov. Robert G. Meyner, a strong presidential possibility in a state which grabbed a Senate seat from the GOP on Tuesday, is another in the same boat. ' Republican presidential co ntenders must run against, rather than on, any Democratic legislative program. This may present a problem in itself. On many proposals there is little real difference between what President Eisenhower has asked and what the Democratic 85th Congress gave him. This problem has bothered Vice President Richard M. Nixon, still the GOP front-runner for the presidency in 1960 despite the challenge raised by millionaire Nelson A. Rockefeller's gubernatorial victory in New York. Nixon has demonstrated he intends to take over more Republican Party control in the next two years. -Historically presidential nominees are more likely to come from a governor’s mansion than the U. S. Senate. That's a plus for Rockefeller along with his big 1958 election triumph. But he has to make his own record in office —and one to be compared with that of the Democrats. Medical Science May Reverse Self By DELOS SMITH UPI Science Editor NEW YORK (UPD — Medical i science may be in the process of reversing itself on the use of Vitamin “E" in treating spasms in the surface blood vessels of people’s legs. Nine years ago a medical scientist found this obscure vitamin relieved those spasms in a number of victims. This caused a medical stir because those spasms cause a painful lamenes and can lead to such blood starvation in the legs they have to be amputated to avoid gengrene. Other scientists tried out vitamin E in other victims. Some couldn’t verify the hopeful results; others verified them only in part. Medical interest slipped. But now it has been revived with a bang. Results of a "blind test” strongly indicate the vitamin can end those spasms. Half Get Blanks The test was made by Drs. Peter D. Livingstone and Clifford Jones in 40 men who had had the spasms for years and some of whom were in a bad way in their legs as the result. Twenty of the 40 got vitamin E in heavy daily doses for 40 weeks. The other 20 got pills which looked exactly like the yjtamin pills but were chemically blank. Neither doctors nor patients knew which patients were getting the vitamin E until the end of the experiment when the identifying code was “broken.” While the experiment was going On, every effort was made to spot the results, if any, as they appeared. But that's hard. The victim feels the spasm if he has his weight on his legs, but the result of an individual spasm is not detectable by the doctor. The doctor sees only damage continuing spasms do to Blood vessels by breaking them down slowly. So the men were required »to walk up two steep steps and then turn and walk down them. This was done daily and they kept walking until the laming pain appeared. indicating spasm. In that way, there was an “objective” measurement of whether spasms decreased during the experimental period. Thirteen Improved During the experiment three men were lost from each set of 20 because they died or their illness became more crippling. Os the remaining 17 who got the vitamin, 13 considered they were improved and four noted no change in their condition. Os the 17 who took the chemical blank, two thought they were improved and 15 were sure they weren’t.
