Social Security Quiz Answers Many Queries
(Editor’s note: Do you have any questions about Social Security? We aU do, don’t we? Send any question you might have to Social Security Quiz, c/o Daily Democrat. You’ll find your answer in this column, which is published each Saturday.) 1.1 am a household worker. Can I get the same social security benefits to which workers in other kinds of employment are entitled? Yes. You and your family can become entitled to the same retirement and survivors benefits available to other workers who qualify under the social security act. 2. I am 63 years old. After my daughter died in 1954, I gave the social security office proof that I was dependent upon her at the time of her death. I was told I could apply for monthly benefits when I am 65 years old if I do not marry again. I am unable to work and my savings are almost gone. Could I apply for a reduced benefit now? Due to a change in the law, you can apply now for your benefits. And, because there is no reduction for a widow or a female dependent parent, your benefits will not be reduced. 3. I am entitled to benefits now at 65 years of age. Could I just wait a few years before applying for benefits and then get my back payments in a lump-sum? No. Back benefits may only be paid for 12 months. To protect your rights, you should visit the social security office now. 4. I am receiving my social security benefits, and I am the father of a disabled child. He was seriously injured in an automobile accident when he was 20 years* old. Could he be eligible for a child’s disability benefit? No. To be eligible for a child's disability benefit, one of the provisions is that the child's disability must have occurred before he became 18 years old. 5. I intend while I am under 72 years old to receive social security retirement benefits and also a pension of $95 a month from my employer. May I still earn SI2OO a year while receiving both the pension and my retirement benefits? Yes. Neither the amount of your social security benefit nor the amount of your company pension would be counted in the SI2OO you may earn and still get all your benefits for the year. ... 6. I'm a woman 60 years old and have been working under social security. In December 1957 I was forced to retire. Can I freeze my social security account? No. The only times a woman worker can freeze her social security account is if she is disabled or if she is 62 years old. 7. I understand persons under 72 drawing benefits cannot earn over SI2OO in a year if they want to receive all monthly benefits. Does this rule also apply to widows under 72 receiving social security benefits or can they earn any amount without affecting their benefits? The SI2OO annual earnings test applies to all beneficiaries under 72. 8. I was born November 1893. If 1 quit working before November 1958 or before I have paid on $4200
in 1958, will my social security benefits be $108.50 when I apply? I was paid maximum social security earnings from 1951 through 1957. If you file when you are 65 in 1958, your benefit amount will be $108.50 based on $4200 earnings a year in 1955, 1956 and 1957. We can drop out the years 1951 through 1954 in figuring your benefits. 9. How many people are receiving social security checks each month at the present time? Over 11,000,000 persons are drawing benefits of over $611,000,000 a month. 10. I received a lump-sum payment when my husband passed away and now I am approaching age 62. Do I have to file another application for my monthly benefits? Yes, you do. When you call at your social security office, it i§ advisable to bring with you your marriage certificate and some proof of your age. Indiana Farm Vole Puzzler For GOP Leaders Fear Many To Back Democrats By EUGENE J. CADOU United Press International INDIANAPOLIS <UPD — Who will get the bulk of the farm vote? That was the big unanswered question today as the major GOP chiefs gathered in Indianapolis for the 80th annual fall meeting of the Indiana Republican Editorial Association. The puzzling reticence of farmers to discuss politics this year was a chief topic of hotel lobby discussion. A number of leaders expressed fear that this means ; many of them will vote Democratic, aSxthey did following sim- . ilar silence in 1948. Foremost factors appeared to be high prices for hogs and cat- . tie, but lower quotations for grain and dairy products. The well- . known high cost of living, even on , the farm, likewise was cited. Schoeppel Farm Expert Leaders hoped that Sen. Andrew ‘ F. Schoeppel of Kansas, the banquet speaker for the editors to- , night, will shed some light on the I situation because he generally is , regarded as an expertji.an. farm problems. He also is chairman of the important Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee. 1 The politicos also talked about ’ one of the principal weaknesses of 1 Governor Harold W. Handley, ( their party's senatorial nominee. * It is the fact that he proposes to leave the Statehouse for Washing- ■ ton in the middle of his guber--1 natorial term. Republicans them- ■ selves seem to be the most num- ' erous critics of this step, accord- ’ ing to observers. There was general agreement, however, that the terrific oratory I of the Republicans during the past ■ two weeks after many days of apathy has improved their posif tion immensely. Former Gov. Ralph F. Gates, ) national committeeman, said the GOP timing has been perfect and will reach its crescendo on Nov. 4. Other leaders opined that the barrage was started too late. Matthews Praises Dre Indiana GOP speakers, who a year ago minimized President , Eisenhower and denounced "modern Republicans”, rallied around Ike. State Chairman Robert W. Matthews, who addressed a luncheon of the editors, said that "the Republican party under President Eisenhower’s leadership has restored peace and rebuilt the nation's defenses. “More than 99 per cent of the total amount of money the United States has spent for missiles was . allocated by the Eisenhower administration,” he said. “The Tru- ■ man administration, in the crucial post-war years when the Russians 1 were working feverishly on missiles, spent far more money for price upports on peanuts than on missile research. "The Democrat charge of lag- • ging national defense was rendered really ridiculous by the voyage on the atomic submarine . Nautilus under the North Pole and ’ development of the moon rocket
