ight well rate high priority in y program of home moderniza- «>• ' I f for many years, bathroom lighti has probably been the most glected of any room in the home, cording to the institute, which ints out that the man and womof the house can actually imove their appearance by using
i more effective lighting to shave and make-up. Minimum lighting standards call for one fixture on both sides of the bathroom mirror. For general lighting, they call for one fixture located above the mirror or on the ceiling. Stall showers should be equipped with a waterproofed ceiling fixture with the switch far enough away to prevent use while standing in the stall. Each of these fixtures should accommodate one 20 watt fluorescent bulb; or, if incandescent lighting is used, one 60 watt bulb, or two 40 watt bulbs. Modern bathroom fixtures are available in enough styles and shades to fit the decor of any bathroom. Adequate lighting standards for other rooms as set forth by the Institute are as follows: • Living Room: At least one ceiling fixture should be provided. In addition, center fixtures in corners, or valance, or cornice lighting above windows- are suggested. Bedroom: There should be a ceiling fixture in each bedroom, to provide the overhead light necessary for safety. Kitchen: A center ceiling fixture is necessary to throw light into cabinets and drawers. Fixtures should* also be provided over the range, sink “and counters. Closets: Each closet should have a ceiling or wall fixture. Ideally, this should be controlled by a switch that turns on the light when the door is opened. Halls and Stairways: A ceiling > fixture is called for in every hall. ’ along with a fixture at the foot and . head of stairways. Basement: Separate fixtures are indicated for laundry, furnace, storage and workbench areas. Exterior: Lights should be provided by front, rear and side doors. Garage: A center ceiling fixture is essential. Attic: Each enclosed space should have one fixture. For convenience, fixtures should be controlled by wall switches at room entrances. In rooms where entrances are more than 10 feet apart, multiple - control switches should be provided. These are switches Located in •'different parts of the room controlling the same fixture, whereby you can light the way ahead of you. For some people, installation of new fixtures is a do-it-yourself project, provided outlets are available. Other lighting projects require the services of an electrician. In replacing old fashioned fixtures with modern ones, be sure to turn off the main switch or remove the fuse before starting the work. z Household Scrapbook | By ROBERTA LEE I o 0 The Paint Brush The bristles of a new paint brush will not shed during the painting process if the brush is held, bristles up, and a spoonful of varnish is poured into the base of the | bristles up. and a - spoonful of bristles. ’Winter Is leumen ln r Is Your House Tight and Ready?
Roof Should Get Top Priority In Checkup Give first attention to your roof when you make an inspection tour this fall to get your house ready for winter. Here’s how to check a roof to make sure it's ready for tire long, rugged months ahead: 1. Take a flashlight into the attic soon after a rain and look for damp spots on rafters and decking. These often indicate that water is seeping through the roofing material. 2. Make the attic as dark as possible and look for pinpoints -♦ of light in the undersurface of the roof. The light Leaks can mean water leaks, 3. Look at the roof from the outside. It should be smooth and flat without signs of wear. If it has a worn, shabby appearance, it probably isn't giving the service it should, and certainly detracts from the looks of your house. If your inspection reveals any of these faults, your next step is to call in a reliable roofing contractor for a professional check. . " If he finds the roof in baa condition, he’ll probably recomi mend an entire new roof of asphalt shingles. Why not make repairs? Simply because an atMineral Wool Ideal For Do-It-Yourselfer Three types of mineral wool insulation are available to the home owner for do-it-yourself insulation. They are mineral wool blankets, long rolls of insulation ideal for insulating attic floors and crawl spaces; batts, which are similar to blankets but in shorter lengths, and pouring wool. The latter comes in lightweight bags and is poured into j the space to be insulated. I ' 1

Bla ■ Era : I jU H—: \ 1 The wise home owner swarms all over his house in . the fall, getting it ready for winter. Important check points are the roof, windows, cracks at foundation level, weatherstripping, and insulation. tempt to repair am old roof rarely works out satisfactorily. A roof w*ears out uniformly over the years. Consequently, the spots not repaired are w r eak, and are bound to show flaws soon. Another reason is that walking on an old roof to make repairs often causes new leaks to appear. In addition, a new roof of asphalt shingles not only will give you and your family years of trouble-free security, but will do a lot to improve the ance of the house, especially if you choose wisely from the many colors available. Thousands of Families Want New Roofing Nearly 30 percent of 80,000 families interviewed nationally by the Home Improvement Council reported that the home improvement they desire most is a new roof.. The advantages of a new roof of asphalt shingles go beyond the obvious one of protection from weather. This roofing material is economical and is available in a wide range of colors, -textures, and designs that make a house look better and add to its value.
SODA STRAW HELPFUL A plastic soda straw placed over the end of an oil can spout will make it easier to lubricate hard-to-reach places.
Fall Inspection Can Save Fuel, Boost Comfort Many home owners fail to 1 realize that the house, like the family car, needs to be “winterized” to get it ready for cold weather. If you want to be sure of more winter comfort and economical > operation in your home, here are some of the most important areas to check: Insulation. For efficiency, Insulation should surrtound the house in a thick, continuous blanket, with no holes or gaps, i If you aren’t aware of the importance of good insulation, consider the fact that • thickness of four inches of mineral wool in the ceiling and at least three inches in walls can save as much as 40 percent annually on heating bills. Doors and windows. These must fit tightly to keep heat from escaping. Old windows and doors that are loose, swollen, or warped should be replaced. Many styles of windows and doors of ponderosa pine are available from building material dealers, including units complete with frame that go into place at a minimum of labor cost. Storm sash. To be efficient, storm sash and storm doors must fit tightly to create a dead air space. Modern combination sash and doors are available in ponderosa pine. These have readily exchangeable glass and screen inserts. Caulking. A careful tour ,of the house with a caulking gun will save many heating dollars. One villain that often goes unnoticed is the joint between foundation and sidew’alls. It should be filled with caulking compound. Other points to watch out for are around window and door frames. Weatherstripping. Be on the lookout for doors and windows that have no weatherstripping, or whose old weatherstripping has become useless through wear packing down, or loss of spring.

Storm Sash Cuts Costs of Heating By 20 Percent Tight-fitting storm windows •nd doors can help reduce the amount of heating fuel consumed during an average winter by 20 percent or more, according to many studies. Storm sash and doors of ponderosa pine are considered by many home owners to offer the greatest fuel savings because wood does not conduct heat outside as many other materials do. A further advantage of wood storm sash and doors is that wood can be painted to match f or harmonize with other exterior colors. \ SHELLAC NEW KNOTS Knots in new wood should be shellacked with a mixture of 50 percent fresh shellac and alcohoi before a prime coat of paint is applied. • |
