Armistice, or Veterans day, will also be celebrated at the hospital, with Post 296 staging a carnival again htis year. Convention Report Robert Gaskill reported fully on the national convention, stating that coverage in the Hoosier Legionnaire was exceptionally good this year. He explained the background committee meetings that start the week before the convention to plan the programs for adoption or rejection by the members. Speakers, Gaskill continued, included such persons as Madame Chiang Kai-Shek, former president Harry S. Truman, Neil McElroy, secretary of defense: the presidents of the national education association, AFL-CIO, governor of Puerto Rico, U. S. delegate to the U. N. Henry Cabot Lodge, and many others. Harold Krider, of Leo, retiring, chairman of the Knightstown* home committee, reported for the! year, including that 19 of the 331 posts contributed. Krider stated that next month he and his family are moving to Quintuplet lakes in Florida. Art Wilkie reported that the legion convention asked everyone to support the National Foundation which is one the verge of great discoveries. He stated that within two years the Legion will support federal aid to education if the local and district groups do not oppose it. Research Helped An American Legion grant of $25,000 in 1947 helped the heart disease research get a program started which will see SSO million in research this year. All members were asked to see that copies of “Need a Lift?” the Legion scholarship booklet, were distributed to schools and libraries in the counties of the fourth district. “Know Your America” was also available, Wilkie continued. Robert Gates, chairman of the steering committee, asked the district to get behind a plan to give the American Legion DSM to Admirals Halsey and Spuille, and Generals Wainright and Ridgeway, which must be approved by the national executive board. Wolcottville and Topeka were reported over their 100% membership mark already, while the district as a whole is 5,517 members behind. November 9 will be the annual box-car roundup. District four has won this for 21 years, but this year competition is greater than usual. Frank Detter, representing post 43, presented commander Keyes with a picture of him with the newly installed local officers. Melvin Heckman presented the ceremonial trophy for graveside services, memorial day, veterans day celebrations, etc., to Al Smith, Fort Wayne postmaster, who was ceremonies chairman last year when the district won the state contest. At least 18 posts have not yet paid their per capita taxes. Walter Firestone, of Columbia City, district historian, reported that he was not able to put everything tha| every chapter considered historical in the district history, and that if the district wished, he would resign. The district voted to keep him. The publicity kickoff for the boxcar roundup at Orland drew fire because of the poor publicity on it. The next district meeting will be at Angola. Shows Tomato Plant Over 11 Feet Tall A tomato plant 11 feet, four inches high, which has aiready provided three pecks of tomatoes, has been raised this summer by Harvey Poling, who lives on the corner of 10th street and Madison. Poling has been raising tomates for many years, but this is the largest plant he has raised. /The i plant was started indoors in a paper milk container, and transplanted outside when about 10 inches high. Poling planted the stem deep in the ground so that it would get deep-soil moisture all summer. He kept adding to the stake until it was 12 feet tall, and the plant reached within eight inches of the top. He used a stepladder to pick the tomatoes. It is r be the tallest plant in tL .. . xtur area this year. Tree Planting Under Soil Bank Reserve Adams county farmers who are considering planting trees on some of their land can put it in the conservation reserve of the soil bank, chairman Victor Bleeke of the county agricultural stabilization, and conservation committee, explains. Bleeke said that in addition to receiving a substantial part of the cost of planting the trees, participating farmers will also get annual per-acre rental payments on land put in the program. Since all conservation reserve contracts for the planting of forest trees must run for 10 years, participants will receive annual payments over this period of time. At the end of the conservation reserve contract period, the chairman pointed out, the trees will be well on the way to becoming market timber. The signup period for the conservation reserve ends October 10. Interested farmers are urged to visit the county ASC office at 130'4 N. 2nd St. and learn details of the program.

De Gaulle * timed from page one) They said the premier told Salan that now that the “battle of the referendum” was won, the Algerian commander would be called to “higher, duties.” De Gaulle picked the east Algerian city of Constantine as the site of his first major policy speech since his referendum victory paving the way for a strong Fifth Republic. Constantine is almost on the front line of the rebel war for independence. It lies in an area with the lowest living standards in North Africa. Some farmers earn no more than SSO a year. The extremist Wing of the Public Safety Committee, which helped bring De Gaulle back to power last June, has been pressing for official recognition of Algeria—with .its one million French settlers and etight million Moslems —as a province of France. They call it “integration.”
