Fred Haney Shooting For Quick Knockout MILWAUKEE (UPD — Fred Haney, having won his first bout with the second-guessers, is now shooting for • a quick knockout that would make him the second manager in history ever to gain a clean sweep over the Yankees in a World Series. Milwaukee players think four-in-a row is quite possible for them. And the usually cautious Haney, long famous for his close-to-the-vest statemehts, even- hinted at a possible sweep,- which only John I McGraw of the Giants previously i achieved against the Yanks in the j 1922 Series. j ‘,‘You can’t win ’em all unless you win that first game,” Haney [bubbled after Warren Spahn huriled the Braves to a 10-inning 4-3 i triumph in Wednesday's opener. Haney laughingly commented to I dressing room visitdr Leo Durocher that “maybe I’m getting a little chesty,” but he had a logical reason. When Haney first announced Spahn would be his opening day starter, some critics felt he was making the wrong move by not nominating Yankee - killer Lew Burdette instead. One other major league manager even said. “Haney is crazy if he goes with anyone else but Burdette in the opener.” The little Milwaukee skipper ignored such criticsm in the same way a he has remained oblivious Ito those who keep claiming he I bunts too much. “I know what they're all worried about,” he said, referring to the nomination of Spahn in the )opener. “They think that I’d have) i a better chance of getting three I 'starts out of Burdette if I picked, 1 I him to work the opener. “They must have awful short! memories. Don’t they remember; that Burdette was my second-) game pitcher last year, too? And |he still managed to start three) games.” . I Now with Spahn a winner already, Haney is in the driver’s seat more than ever. Whereas he lost the opener last year, he’s now one up and Burdeete is primed and ready. Bruton singled sharply to right center' to score Joe Adcock with the kun that gave the Braves a victory before 46,367 fans. It was the third hit in that inning off the speed-balling Ryne i Duren, who was called to the ) rescue of the Yankees’ star southpaw. Whitey Ford, in the eighth. Adcock got the Braves started with one out in the 10th With a single to right. Duren got Wes Covington to fly out but Del Crandall singled through the middle sending Adcock to second. Then up came Bruton, who didn't get into the game until the ninth when he batted for Andy Pafko and fanned. The slender outfielder fouled off one pitch, took a ball, then connected with a Duren fast ball for his winning hit. Duren also was on the mound when the Braves behind 3-2, tied the game in the eighth. Ford was lifted after Eddie Mathews walked and Hank Aaron doubled with none ’Out. Dur e n struck out Adcock on five pitches. Manager Casey Stengel went to the mound and after a brief chat it was decided to pitch to the) lefthanded hitting Covington. Duren got two strikes past him before Covington hit a high fly to Mickey Mantle that enabled Mathews to score after the catch. The Yankees got the lead first) in the fourth inning when Bill Skowron homered. Milwaukee came right back ini the bottom of the fourth.
