State Highway Toll Continues To Mount At Least 117 Killed In State This Month United Press International Indiana's worst wave of traffic deaths in 1958 continued into September’s last day today as the toll grew to at least 23 in 80 hours. Two deaths in Daviess County Hospital at Washington within an hour this morning were the latest fatalities. Delbert Goodwin, 28. Plainville, was fatally on Ind. 358 near Washington when his car hit a tree as Goodwin drove toward his home from Bicknell, where he operated a tavern. Jerry Johnson, 15, Shoals, became the 16th person to die of Indiana weekend accident injuries. Jerry died in the Washington hospital from injuries sustained Friday night when his bike was struck by an auto on a county road. Six deaths Monday, three of them in one accident, helped boost the toll since the weekend count started at 6 p.m. last Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Martin Eubank of Van Buren and Philip Hemm of Piqua, Ohio, were killed in a wreck near Marion. Donald Stone, 18, Bloomington, was killed by a hit-run vehicle near Mooresville, and Mrs. Beulah Kleyla, 60, Tipton, a nurse, was killed when two cars and a truck collided near Tipton. A man was killed in an accident near LaGrange early Monday. The Indiana highway death toll for September climbed to at least 117, heaviest toll since last December and the first month this year in which the toll has crossed the 100 mark.
Two Hospitalized As Polio Victims VALPARAISO, Ind. (UPD — George Rudman, 28. and his broth-er-in-law, John Dille, 23, who live on adjacent farms near Valparaiso, were hospitalized today with ailments believed to be polio. Rudman and Dille were taken to Porter Memorial Hospital during the weekend. Dille’s illness was diagnosed as polio, and the ailment of Rudman, reported paralyzed from the hips down, had not been diagnosed definitely. J LITTLE ROCK (.Continued from page one) school board, school officials and even to school teachers. If any had had anything to do with reopening the four schools today on a private basis, they would have been in danger of a contempt citation from the Eighth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Two circuit court judges handed down the order Monday in Omaha. Neb., at the request of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. The restraining order is good until next Monday, when the circuit court, meeting at St. Louis, will consider the question of an injunction. UNEMPLOYMENT (Continued from page one) ployment declined slightly in many places because of renewed hiring in such basic “hard goods" industries as steel, metal products and machinery. Eleven areas moved up a notch in the department’s classification, indicating considerable more jobs were available in those areas this month than last July. The areas were Peoria, 111. Paterson, Perth Amboy and Trenton. N.J., Reading, Pa., Providence, R.1., Bridgeport, Waterbury and New Britain, Conn., Fall River, Mass., and Wheeling. Stu-; benviHe, W.Va.-Ohio. The department added 14 smaller areas to its separate list-; ing of localities with “substan-i tial” unemployment. They were Alexander City, Ala., Fort Smith.: Ark., Hopkinsville, Ky., Frederick, and Westminster, Md., Sturgis,! Mich., Corning-Hornell, and Kings-! ton, and Olean-Salamanaca, N.Y.,' Batavia-Georgetown- West Union,; Ohio, Atdmore, Okla., Williams-; port, Pa., Wichita Falls, Tex., and Oshkosh, Wis. MINOR (Continued from page one) to contract terms with the union. The union was scheduled to call its members at GM plants out cm a nationwide strike at 10 a.m. Thursday if an agreement is not reached by that time. The marathon talks between Chrysler and the union gave the firm a second chance to settle before GM. Last week Reuther, walked put of talks with Chrysler because he Was not satisfied with the progress the company was making toward agreement.

Missing Convict Is Sought On Alcatraz All-Out Search Os Fog-Swept Alcatraz SAN FRANCISCO (UPD-Sixty guards, armed with carbines and revolvers, prowled fog-swept Alcatraz Island today in search of a convict who with a companion tried to “beat the rock." The missing man was Aaron Walter Burgett. 28. a rangy gunman from St, Louis. His companion, Clyde Johnson. 40. a Memphris, Tenn., bank robber, was . caught several hours after they overpowered a guard and disappeared. Aiding in the all-out search were squads of FBI men rushed to the island prison from San Francisco. A Coast Guard helicopter and four Coast Guard cutters circled the island to prevent a getaway by boat. Burgett and Johnson flashed a knife in the face of guard Harold Miller shortly after 3 p.m. Monday. “They jumped me with a knife and told me I’d .be all right if I was good,” Miller said. “Then they slipped away in the fog.” — Both men were outside the prison walls and working on a garbage detail at the time. They told Miller a getaway launch was waiting for them. The escape came to light about 3:40 p.m. when prison officials real iz e d Miller and his two charges had failed to return from their work. Associate Warden Joseph B. j Latimer sounded the alarm. The ! prison whistle hooted the news ; that an escape had been made. All the other convicts were im- : mediately locked in their cells. Latimer said he doubted Burgett could have swum from the island through the man S killing tides of San Francisco Bay to the mainland I*4 miles away. About 15 minutes after the search began Miller was found, his eyes and mouth bound tightly with cloth and his wrists and legs bound wjth rope. He was lying in the brush just below some guards’ houses on the southeast side of the island. The search had been going on for about hour when a sharpeyed crewman of a Coast Guard patrol boat spotted Johnson.
