Social Security Quiz Answers Many
(Editor’s dote: Do you have any questions about Social Security? We all do, don’t we? Send any question you might have to Social Security Quiz, c/o Daily Democrat. You’ll find your answer in this column, which is published each Saturday.) 1. My husband died in 1943. I received social security benefits for myself and my daughter until she became 18. A friend of, mine told me I can now qualify for benefits because I am 62 years of age. What do I have to do get these benefits? The law was amended in 1956 permitting widows to qualify at age 62 instead of 65. If you have not remarried, you may now become entitled to widows benefits by applying for them at your Social Security Office. When you call at our office bring with you your husband's social security card and a birth certificate or other document to prove your age. 2. I am 45 and receiving benefits as a widow for myself and my son, age 16, who is paralyzed. Will the benefits stop when my son is 18? If your son has a severe disability which prevents him from working the disability provisions of the social security law permit continuation of the monthly benefits to you and your son beyond the age of 18. The necessary applications must be filed for this purpose shortly before your son’s 18th birthday. 3 I have married and wish to change my name on my social cesurity card. Where can I get the form necessary to do this and is it really necessary? W This is a good question. Many ’ women do not realize that when they marrj’ or change their name they should also change the name under which they are registered with thre Social Security Administration. It is important that you do this to insure that all of your earnings are properly credited to your account. The necessary form, OAAN 7003, may be picked up at your nearest social security district office, or will be mailed to you upon request. 4. I will be 65 soon. I am receiving disability benefits now, What sort of claim must I file when I’m 65? Will I get an increase at that time? No application will be necessary. The amount you are now receiving is your regular old-age insurance amount, paid to you as_ a disability benefit. When you reach age 65, it will be automatically changed to an old-age benefit. The a--1 mount will remain the same. 5! Will I receive the same amount of social security if I reCHINA (Continued from imue orie) settlement more difficult. Suggestions that a conference of foreign ministers should be called to deal with the China problem if the Warsaw talks bog down found little open favor among the big powers. The smaller nations’ representatives doubted the desirability of such a meeting.
May Britt, attractive screen newcomer, has the leading feminine role in "The Hunters,” , de-, scribed as the first great spectacle of the jet age, playing Sunday and Monday at the Adams theater. The big cast includes such popular male stars as Robert Mitchum, Robert Wagner and Richard Egan. Breath-taking aerial scenes are enhanced by Technicolor photography, and the production was under the direction of Dick Powell. “The Reluctante Debutante.” a comedy which has been called as hilarious as “Father of the Bride” is showing at the Drive-in theater Sunday only. Produced in Technicolor the picture stars Rex Harrison and Kay Kendall, and presents an attractive pair of popular youngsters, John Saxon and Sandra Dee. The co-feature at the Drive-in is a Technicolor action hit. "Run of the Arrow” with Rod Steiger. If you have something to sell or rooms for rent, try a Democrat Want Ad— they bring results.

FARM (Continued from »a<e one) the mower. “The department of agriculture records show further that during the last five (Benson) years, farmers produced and sold 11% more food and non-food products than in the 5 preceeding years, 1948-52 inclusive. Thus the farmers got over sl2 billion less for 11% more production in the 5 Benson years than they received from the lesser amount of production in the 5 preBenson years. “Had our farmers been paid for the larger volume of food and non- > food products they marketed dur- ; ing the last 5 years, at the same ( rate of the 5 years immediately preceeding Benson, their net income in these last 5 years would have been S2O billion more than they actually received under Benson. “It should be noted that while farmers have gotten substantially less for a larger volume of food in the last five years, the average per capita expenditures for food in the United States increased from approximately $340 annually to $440 in 1957. Farmers marketed 11% more food in 1957 than in 1952. But consumers paid the people between the farmer and the retail food counter $6.1 billion more in 1957 than in 1952. “Yet, under the anti-farmer prejudice built up among consumers by Bensdn, the consumers tend to blame farmers for high food costs. “All these figures are in his official books, but he never explains to consumers that prices have fallen sharply at the farm gate in the last 5 years, and that the ipcreased costs of food have occurred between the farm gate and the retail counter. “It is costing seven times as much to run the agricultural program under Benson as it did when the Democrats left office in 1952 with less results to show for it. Benson has increased the staff of the department of agriculture 21 %. Back in 1952, when there were 67,400 employees, he called it a

‘Swollen Bureaucracy.* Now, he has 85,000 employees — and gets less done for the farmers. “The department of agriculture and the Benson record are involvin the mess in Washington today — and the farmers of America desperately need relief from his antifarmer administration of the farm programs." STORM (Continued from page one) visory late Friday night that put its winds at 115 miles an hour. The Weather Bureau employed perhaps its most urgent tone yet in advance warnings of Helene’s doings. v Plenty Os Warning Recalling criticism that Louisiana did not get adequate warning of a hurricane that left more than 500 dead at Cameron in 1957, the forecasters .repeatedly warned a full day in advance that Helene Was a highly potent storm. Even so. Civil Defense authorities had to forcibly evacuate some residents who refused to leave beach homes in the myrtle beach area. “This is still a very severe and dangerous hurricane,” the Weather Bureau warned. “Islands, beaches and waterfront areas should be evacuated completely if loss of life is to be avoided. "Many escape routes will become covered with water and there will be a rapid rise in the water height as the storm center approaches." Hurricane warnings were displayed from Savannah to Cape Hatteras and gale warnings were up from the Cape north to the Virginia Capes and south to Fernandina, Fla. ACCIDENT (Continued from_ page one) p.m. *4 mile~south of Decatur on U. S. 27. Involved in the two-car accident were Martha Ann Kelley, 22, Fort Wayne, and Daniel W. Rines, 18, Fort Wayne. » A passenger in the Kelley vehicle, Sheila Altman. 19, Decatur, was thrown from the auto when the vehicle was. struck from the rear by the Rines vehicle, causing the Kelley auto to spin around on the highway. She was treated for lacerations to her left eye and nose, and received abrasions to her elbows and knese, at the Adams county memorial hospital and released. Damage to both vehicles was estimated at S2OO each by the sheriff's department and state police.
