■Creamed n| ■ Comments on S.S. .qrv| ■ Creamed Comments on the Sun- ' day school lesson,, introducing the gospel. Luke 1:1-4; 3:1-6 for Sunday, October 5. Luke, the physician, and companion to Paul the apostle from 50 A D. to his final imprisonement, , is the writer of the third gospel, Luke was not only Paul's physician. but his historian and bioggrapher. He had ample opportunity to meet apostles and others who knew Jesus, and to study existing accounts of his life. Luke w’as the < only Gentile who wrote any part . of the Bible. The ministry of John the Baptist was that of a herald announcing the coming of the King, preparing the people for ! Christ's ministry. i Vs. 1-4. “Forasmuch as many • have taken in hand to set forth in ; order declaration of those things ! which are most surely believed > among us. . . . Even as they delivered them unto us.which from ; the beginning were eyewitnesses, ; and ministers of the word; . . . 4 I tseemed good to me also, having 1 had perfect understanding Theo- 1 I philus That thous mightest • know the certainty of those things, ! wherein thou has been instructed." This letter to Theophilus, pos- : csibly a leading Roman official 4 who had become a Christian, out- ; lines the facts about Christ's life, ' upon which rests the Christian faith. Luke acknowledged there I were other accounts of Christ’s life, but. in addition, his account was based on the testimonies of | eyewitnesses to Christ’s activities. j

Luke made a careful investigation of the facts before presenting them, and then outlined them in an orderly manner. His work was that of a historian and a research expert. Luke was concerned with facts about Christ and the understanding of the facts by the person addressed. Vs. 1, 2. “Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar. Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrach of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrach of Ituraet and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetraeh of Abilene. . . Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John, the son of Zacharias in the wilderness;’-’ Luke realized his story was of world importance, and so he related it to the history of the time. Tiberius Caesar was the Roman emperor A.D. 14-37. The fifteenth year was A.D. 28-29. Pontus Pilate was governor of Judea A.D. 26-36. Annas was high priest from A.D. 6-15. Three years after he was deposed, his son-in-laW, Caiaphas was appoinnted to the office, but Annas still exerted a great deal of influence. The wilderness was the wild, barren region to the east and southeast of Jerusalem, I possibly the valley of the Jordan. Vs. 3. 4. “And he came into all 1 the county about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins; ... As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness.” John did not stay -in one place, but moved about baptizing people on both sides of the Jordan. John’s austere life followed the general pattern of the prophet Elijah. John condemned the sins of the people of Israel and called on them to repent of their sins. Baptism was an exuression and sign of repentance, and the beginning of a new life. Esaias’ words are found in Isaiah 40.3. Vs. 5. 6 "Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth; . And dll flesh shall see the salvation of God." FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH 221 South Fourth Street ’ I Stuart H. Brightwell. Pastor RALLY DAY 9:15 a.m, Sunday School Hour.
