. Forecast Further ; Farm Price Decline t Government Report Forecasts Decline > • WASHINGTON (UPI) — An Agl riculture Department report today , forecast further declines in farm r prices this fall, raising the prospect of lower prices for some r foods. With a record crop in prospect, a seasonal pickup in hog market- . ings and egg production running i above a year ago, prices to farm- ■ ers are likely to tend down in the next few months, department eco- : nomists said. Average prices received by , farmers in mid-August were 2 per cent above a year earlier but 5 per cent below the 1958 high point I reached in May. The report’s highlights included: —Hog marketings are increasing seasonally and price declines are likely for the next few months. Prices in 1959 will be “a good deal lower” than this year. —Prices of fed cattle which produce choice grade beef were a little above a year earlier in midSeptember and may hot change much through the fall. An upturn is possible before the end of the year. —Any further seasonal price rise for eggs this fall is likely to be small because increased production and prices for. the rest of 1958 probably will average below those of 1957. — —For broilers, continued heavy production and low prices are in prospect while heavy turkey supplies will keep the normal seasonal price increase to a “small” figure. —Fresh vegetable supplies this fall will be slightly larger than last year; prices received by growers are likely to average close to 1957 levels. —Supplies of dry beans will be up sharply and prices to farmers will be “moderately to substantially” below last year. —Prices of animal feed grains and high-protein feeds have declined in recent weeks and further seasonal declines are expected as bumper crops move to market this fall. —Wheat prices are 5 to 15 cents., per bushel further below the price support rate this month than one year ago and are expected to continue further below support for the rest of the year. The situation was blamed on heavy production and an increase in the amount of wheat not eligible for government support because it was grown in i violation of crop control laws. Reasonable Time To Jury Over TV Case House Committee To Delay Own Inquiry WASHINGTON (UPD — Chairman Oren Harris (D-Ark.) of the House influence-investigating subsaid today he would give a federal grand jury “reasonable time” to act on the Pittsburgh TV Channel 4 case before resuming his own inquiry into it. Harris said his subcommittee did not wish to interfere in any way in the grand jury’s work on the case, which involves allegations of a quarter million dollars in bribery*propositions. — Other members of the subcommittee pressed for a full congressional exploration of the case. The inquiry so far has featured the names of former Chairman George C. McConnaughey of the'

Federal Communications Commission, Sen. George A. Smathers (DFla.) and Democratic Mayor David L. Lawrence of Pittsburgh, all of whom have denied any wrong doing. However, the members said they also wish to give the grand jury a chance to act first. Harris said he understood that the grand jury has been considering the. case. He said he did not • wish to say how much time • he considered “reasonable" for it to complete action. The grand jury is the same one which today indicted ex-FCC Commissioner Richard A. Mack and Miami attorney Thurman A; Whiteside on charges of conspiracy to influence the FCC’s award of Miami TV Channel 10. The indictments grew out of an investigation by Harris’ group. The subcommittee today began looking into the general licensing policies of the Federal Power Commission. Committee members discussed the history of FPC policies with commission members. Interim Teletype Boosts Suspended Proposed Increase Is Blocked By FCC WASHINGTON (UPl)—The Federal Communications Commission planned today to investigate proposals for interim rate increases on teleprinter service as part of an overall inquiry into charges and regulations of private line services. The interim increases on teletypewriter service were suspended by the commission Wednesday until Jan. 1, 1959. American Telephone. & Telegraph Co, and Western Union had proposed the higher charges to become effective Oct. 1 They would have taken ef- | feet automatically had the FCC not acted. AT&T had planned to upgrade rates on teleprinter service an average 26 per cent to bring in an additional 11 million dollars in revenue. Western Union sought increases averaging 23 per cent to boost its yearly revenues about 56.700.000. The commission—sa id i t would resume consideration of teletypewriter charges at a hearing Oct. 2. The FCC decided to block the rate increases after receiving a score of protest petitions from most of the big users of private line teleprinter facilities. The commission said the proposed tariff revisions “r ais e d questons as to the propriety of the level of the proposed rates and proposed changes in the rate structure and also as to possible effects on competition." It authorized all parties who had filed petitions seeking a suspension of the tariff revision to intervene in the inquiry. The commission said if it does not reach a decision by Jan. 1 the new rates will automatically go into effect. But and Western Union will be required to keep I records on increased charges collected in 'order to make later refunds if the increases are later cancelled.
