FATHER (Continued from page one) on her face. Police said McMillan broke down and cried in the jail at Sparta. He apparently intended to kill himself after shooting the children but “probably didn’t have enough nerve,” officers said. McMillan admitted having “a couple of glasses oF whiskey” at a brother’s home before going to his home. He broke a screen in the back door to get in, police said. HARTKE (Continued from page one) Close at |iis side on most appearances is Mayor Hartke's wife, Martha, a native of Richtnond. They have five children. At the recent Truman - Hartke rally at Fort Wayne the hundreds of Adams county people there were impressed when Mrs. Hartke went up and down the aisles shaking hands with those present. Hartke was born in rural Pike county. His father was a school teacher and postmaster. Vance Hartke was a basketball star at Stendal high school and Evansville college. When he was graduated from Evansville college, he won a double scholarship to Indiana university law school from which he later was graduated. Hartke has been a practicing lawyer in Evansville and served as deputy prosecutor. He has been active in civic and charitable organizations and in St. Paul’s Lutheran church. A member of the Wabash valley improvement association, he has actively fought for flood control reforms needed to allow the state’s farmers to survive. As mayor, Hartke has installed no-fix tickets, police civil service and the merit system; slum clearance, cut taxes, reduced fire losses and won national award., cut traffic toll and won national award, built swimming pools, paved a record number of streets, expanded water service, and began airport improvement. DEFENSE (Continued from page one) remotely connected with our national security.” Moscow Warns Britain They said that if the Warsaw talks with Communist China fail, “we should immediately call on the United Nations to bring about a cease fire followed by a military evacuation” of Quemoy. At Taipei, Formosa, meanwhile, the United States and Nationalist China were reported in full accord on policy in the Quemoy crisis. In another development a Moscow Radio broadcast warned Britain that backing the United States in any attack on Communist China would bring the same nuclear retaliation the Russians have threatened against America. State Department Spokesman Lincoln White said late Tuesday the United States and Nationalist China "have used the utmost restraint in the face of 'continued provocation by the Chinese Communists” in the Formosa Strait controversy. But he declined to say how much longer this country and its Nationalist Chinese ally would continue to do so. Does Not Know White said he did not know whether it was true, as reported from Formosa, that Nationalist President Chiang " Kai-shek had asked U.S. approval to send his warplanes to attack Red artillery positions on the mainland. These positions have shelled the offshore island of Quemoy for a month. Nationalist Chinese Ambassador George Yeh, meantime, said Red China must give “reliable assurances” of halting military activity in the Formosa Strait before Nationalist China will make any commitment on military operations. Yeh made the statement when asked about a possible cease fire. Over 2,500 Daily Democrats are sold and delivered in Decatur each day. David A. Macklin Attorney ESTATE NO. WW3 NOTH E TO AM. Tipton City Council Reverses Time Stand TIPTON, Ind. (UPD—The Tipton City Council today reversed itself and voted to go along with the state next Sunday when it returns to Central Standard Time. They had planned to I turn clocks back an hour to conform with the law, and then go to work an hour earlier. Death Os Conservation Officer Held Suicide MARTINSVILLE. Ind. (UPD - j Authorities today blamed suicide | caused by “very poor health” for the death of state conservation officer Ralph L. Brown, 42, Morgantown. i Brown’s body was located by helicopter late Tuesday after authorities received a report he had left his home with his service revolver. He was” shot in the temple at the edge of h woods about a mile south of Morgantown. NATIONALIST (Continued from pag'e one) on the supposedly superior Mig17s in combat and defeat them so thoroughly. He referred newsmen to the record of American airmen in Korea when superior training was credited with the victory. The Nationalists had do w n e d only 17 Mig jets in the months of aerial battles over the Formosa Strait since the Communist high command rushed hundreds of jet fighters and bombers to the coastal airports opposite Formosa in July and August. First reports of today’s battle said four Migs were shot down. Then more pilots reported and the number of claims increased. When gun camera film confirmed the large number of kills the Nationalist Defense Ministry proclaimed a “glorious victory.” Hospital Hit While the planes battled through the skies Communist artillery kept up a half - hearted bombardment of the Quemoys. United Press International correspondent Charles Smith reported from Quemoy the Red siege guns damaged Quemoy’s three-story hospital Tuesday and early today. Capt. Kuo Chin, hospital surgeon, said a shell fragment hit and /slightly wounded a nurse. Most of the patients have been moved to underground concrete wards since, the hospital received 12 direct shell hits early in September. Smith also reported a second American casualty on Quemoy. The latest was Lt. Charles Beresford. 33, whose wife, Aideen, lives at 375 Cedar Ave., Long Branch. N.J. Beresford, a Signal Corps photographic officer, received a crushed leg in an unloading accident and was flown back to Formosa. 25 carrier salesmen deltver daily over 2,301' Daily Democrats is Decatur.
