Kitchens Can ] Be Up-Dated Step By Step From the financial point of view, one of the best’things about kitchen modernizing is that “everything doesn’t have to be done at once.’’ Thus, if the current state of the budget will not permit an overall remodelling job, there are many individual improvements that can be made at relatively small cost. Each will make its own immediate contribution to the homemaker’s convenience and well-being, and at the same time, be an important step toward the ultimate/ realization of her “dream kitch- ! en.” Just re-covering the counter surfaces ■ can often work wonders I in perking up the appearance and | stepping up the efficiency of the : kitchen. Most commonly used materials are ceramic tile, linoleum, I plastics, stainless steel or wood. Equally pleasing result! can be obtained by re-doing the flooring or the walls. In choosing a new floor covering. make sure that it is both dirt and grease-resistant. Linoleum, ; rubber tile, asphalt tile and vinyl; plastics are all good. When it comes to new wall cov- ! erings, you can choose tiling, thin gauge linoleum or washable wallpaper. To give your kitchen a refreshing “new look.” Color Works Wonders Even a fresh paint job, can change the whole appearance of your kitchen, if -you—use —colors judiciously. Darker shades bring walls “closer,” pale tones “push” them out, make the room look more spacious, Whites, grays, blues, and greens are cool and restful. Reds, yellows, pink and beige are warm and cheerful. The introduction of more adequate and convenient cabinet space need not await the complete “re-doing" of the kitchen. On the unft-by-unit replacement plan, you can start your improvement program at once, with the assurance that when the project is completen. the overall effect will be One of perfect harmony and functional coordination. Wall and base cabinet units can be arranged in many different ways to create a kitchen “individualized" to your own needs and tastes. Modern Appliances One or more modern appliances may go a long way toward making your “life in the kitchen” less burdensome and more pleasant. Typical of the way in which a single new appliance can transform a whole kitchen is a “refrig-! erator center” that combines the! wall refrigerator with cabinettes, I base cabinets <or even another! major appliance) in a single free-j standing unit. This you can use I in many different ways in your! kitchen: as ( a modern room divider. recessed in an alcove or set against a wall. Or if eye-level cooking is prominent among the features you envision in your “dream kitchen.”! there is the easily installed “stack-on” gas oven. . !■' . I S» . j WOOD REPAIRS Chipped furniture, or other woodwork is easily repaired by rebuilding the missing sections witjj wood putty. Sold as a powder,! wood putty when mixed with wa-| ter dries into a hard, wood-like substance which is easly sanded.! sawed or carved. I

Wainscot Protects Lower Walls A wainscot is the modern and most satisfactory way of protecting a vulnerable lower wall area, or covering up cracked plaster or similar damage already done. Generally, in existing construction, there are two methods of applying wainscots. Over waUsfe which are uneven, furring strips are recommended. There should be sufficient strips-,or headers so that all edges of each panel will I bear on a continuous support. If the hardboard is to be fasten- ! ed to a solid backing, the latter i should be straight, firmly attachI ed and dry. If an adhesive is to I be used on an old surface, remove any wallpaper or loose paint. Scratch the painted surface to provide a strong bond between the adhesive and the backing. Spacing of the furring strips de--1 pends on the thickness of the pan- | els. On open framing, the studs I or furring strips may be spaced i up to 16 inches on center with . panels 3/16" thick and up to 24 inches with 5/16" material. With solid backing having little nail holding power, the framing mem- . bers for material may be i spaced up to 12 inches on center, for 3/16" p.anels up to 16 inches : and for W up to 24 inches.' When the panels are applied diI rectly to the framework, begin
at the center and drive Iti” nails perpendicular to the surface at points approximately 8 inches apart at intermediate supports and 4 inches apart around all edges. Use finishing nails which will penetrate into the nailing base at least one inch. To conceal nail heads, countersink.
