I C<>mnientsA:l on S.S. .aryl |_Lesson\>!*?g| Creamed Comments on the Sunday School Lesson, “Justice and Judgment,” Matt. 25:31-46 for Sunday, September 28* , The setting of this lesson is the Mount of Olives, on Tuesday of the Passion Week, the last week of Christ's life on earth. Around him are gathered his disciples, who have come to him to get certain ' things straight. His words deal with the subject of divine justice in the ! judging of the world and its peo- ; pies, emphasizing the fact that God's justice requires us to show ' •love and mercy toward others. ’ Vs. 31-33. "When the Son of Man i shall come in his glory, and all the ‘ •holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his |lory; . . . And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a . »■ shepherd divideth his sheep from the gpats: . . . And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.” Jesus Is the 'only one who refers to himself as the Son of Man, being both man and God. In his first coming, he came as a babe in all humility and in subjection to men; his second coming will show him to be the Lord of all. who will rule'in power and glory, and as judge of, the nations of the world. Sheep symbolize mildness, simplicity, defenselessness, patience and usefulness—all beneficial traits; goats symbolize combativeness, ill-scented of-

fensiveness of a life of sin. The! right hand is a place of honor, the! left, a place of disgrace. \ <! Vs. 34-36. “Then shall the king say until them on his right hand. Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: . . . For I was an hungred and ve gave me meat: I was thirsty, and-ye gave me drink: I was I a stranger, and ye took me in: j . . . Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was 1 in prison, and ye came unto me." The kingdom referred to is the| same as life eternal and refers to.I the blissful state of the righteous I in heaven. The works of mercy ■ mentioned here show that love,l such as Christ showed, had been implanted in the hearts of softie of his followers. Vs 37-40. “Then shall the righteous answer him, saying. Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? . . . When saw we thee a) stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? . And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you. Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, | ye have done it unto me.” One of the marks of the righteous is their unawareness of the fact they have been righteous. Ostentation is too often characteristic of benevolence. They were amazed at the interpretation Christ puts upon their benevolet deeds of helping the poor and ■ afflicted. - — - ... «- | Vs. 41-43. “Then shall he say un-[ to thin: on the left hand. Depart from me. ve cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for-the devil and his angels: . •. . For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: ... I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye! clothed me not: sick, and in prison. | and ye visited me not.” Sins of omission are as great as those of] commission The failure of those bn the left hand to perform acts of mercy showed they did not have the spirit of Christ. Jesus condemned the sin of indifference. The wicked thought they were good men, because they obeyed the law, performed certain rituals, but their motives were wrong and God looketh upon the heart. Vs. 44-46. “Then shall they also I answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred. or a thirst, or a stranger, or naked, or i sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? . . . Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you. Inasmuch as ye did it i’ not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me . . . And these shall go away into everlasting punishnient. but the righteous into life eterhal.” Eternal fire Was a place of torment to which those indifferent to the needs of others were to be assigned at the time of judgment. --Based on copyrighted outlines produced tiy the Division of C.'hristian Education, National Council of the Churches of Christ in the U.
