food, clothing, and other necessities, Christian H. W. Luecke, manager of the Fort Wayne social security district office, stated, although benefits from social security are intended primarily as basis for individual security. Cftd-age, survivors, and disability insurance benefits are paid in the Fort Wayne district at the rate of over $18,600,000 a year Luecke added. “This is an increase of about 29.6% over last year,” Luecke said.

"Our studies have shown that many of these aged people, widows, and orphans have little or no other resources,” he pointed out. “For something like -9%, social security benefits, received as an earned right, are the only cash income, “This is especially important in a time of economic recession,” he said. "Social security benefits are being paid nationally at a rate of more than 8 billion dollars annually.” Payments to a retired worker
way around this Buick, you’ll know still more how right all this is. From anywhere you look, here is a classic modem concept that is Buick speaking a new language of today. A language of fine cars priced within the reach of almost anyone. A language of quality and comfort and quiet pride of ownership. And when you see your quality Buick dealer and get behind the wheel, the car will speak to you in a language of performance satisfactions without equal.

average about $65 per month, Luecke said. The average for a widow with two young children is $145. The maximum payment for a retired couple is $162.80 a month, and the maximum for a family is S2OO. “There were several reasons for the increase in benefits over last year,” Luecke said. One was the payment of benefits to people who were brought under the law for the first time in recent years—self employed farmers, for example. Another was the reduction in the retirement age to 62 for women and the starting of disability insurance benefits to disabled people 50 or over. Luecke agreed that one factor in the increase may be the business recession. "I’m sure some older people who would have preferred to keep on working have been forced to retire because of the general business conditions. Some mothers may be getting survivors insurance benefits for themselves as well as their children now, because they have lost jobs as a result of the recession,” Luecke said. The result would have been a further increase in public welfare costs, costs which are paid out of general taxation. The table below shows the number apd amount of each type of benefit being paid in the Fort Wayne district: First column is number of beneficiaries, second is total monthly payments.

Answers to that and other questions are supplied by Purdue University agricultural economists, who list these four major effects: I improved income of those farmers who obtain payments for placing their land in the conservation reserve. Removal of less productive land from crop production, which will boost prices of crops and livestock raised by farmers who don’t dition. Less cost to taxpayers per bushel of adjustment in crop producrectly participate. More soil conservation will be achieved by the conservation reserve than was achieved under the acreage reserve program which has been discontinued.
Buick’s New Styling Is Sleek And Low It • W **«wgf**^i: ' ."J:' ' J Sleek and low describes Buick’s new styling luxurious two-door Electra hardtop which measures less than 55 inches in height yet retains approximately the same headroom as last year’s Buick. The “delta-wing” styling of the rear fenders that flare out to a point, and twin headlights that are set on an angle give the new Buick a look that is light and jaunty. Compound windshields that curve back into the roof and eliminate wind noise are a feature on all 1959 Buicks. The Electra is powered by a 401-cubic inch V-8 engine with 10.5-to-l compression ratio. Twin turbine Dynaflow and power steering are standard on all models in the Electra series.
Q. Will an individual farmer get the county average payment? A. No. Payments to individual farmers will be based on the productivity of their land compared with the county average. For instance, if the county average payment is S2O and the farmer’s land has a productivity rating of 20 per cent above average, his payments will be $24 an acre. If the productivity rating is 80 per cent of average, the payment will be 80 per cent multiplied by S2O, or sl6 an acre for eligible land. Q. Can I put all cropland on my farm into the conservation reserve? A. Yes. And if you do you’ll get a 10 per cent bonus. Q. How many years can I place my land under contract? A. If the land already is in grass or legumes, three years, or five or 10 years. The signup of the 1959 conservation reserve is underway. Farmers are invited to vsiit the county ASG office and learn about details of this voluntary program.
New Adult Mystery Series On Television Compete With Horde Os Adult Westerns By VERNON SCOTT UPI Hollywood Correspondent HOLLYWOOD (UPD— Two new “adult mystery” tele-series hit the air this fall to compete with the horde of “adult Westerns” for action, gunplay and melodrama. The difference between an adult mystery and any other kind of whodunit is that the hero outthinks the heay instead of shooting him down. The newcomers are “Peter Gunn” (NBC) and “77 Sunset Strip” (ABC). A brace of handsome, elegantly tailored actors play the lead roles with intellectual disdain for rough stuff. Efrem Zimbalist of “Sunset Strip,” and Craig Stevens of “Gunn” both feel the' public will welcome a change from the carnage of horse operas. “I play a character named Stuart Bailey, a sophisticated guy who uses his gun only when he can’t outsmart the crooks,” Zimbalist said. “Peter Gunn is a well-educated man who behaves like a Harvard graduate,” says Stevens. “He’s a trouble shooter who hires out his services, mostly on the side of the law.” Both Frequent Bistros The shows have other similarities. Both heroes hang out in bistros and are smooth ’ operators with the ladies. Zimbalist and Stevens agree their characters do not resemble the traditional tough-talking, harddrinking private eyes of the past. “We’ve completely avoided cliches,” Stevens said. "There are no dumb cops who blunder around while I clear up a murder. Naturally, there is a cop in the series, but he’s intelligent, and we work together.” “I play an ex-O.S.S. man who uses j,udo to combat the bad guys,” Zimbalist explained. ■ ■ "I *'ff ** ■ 1

One difference between the programs is length. "Peter Gunn” is a half-hour show. “77 Sunset Strip” is an hour-long thriller with Roger Smith alternating with Zimbalist in the series. Change Off Weekly "We play a pair of detectives,” Zimbalist said, "and we change off just like the Maverick boys do. Making an hour show every week is just too much work. "Originally the show was filmed as a feature picture, but it wasa TV series instead. Therefore, our first show, Oct. 10, will run an hour and a half.” Stevens’ show experienced some changes too. At first it was titled “Gjjjd for Hire.” But Paramount

Pictures objected because it made a movie years ago named “This Gun For Hire.” “It’s just as well,” Stevens said philosophically. "Audiences might have thought it was a Western. As it is, when we go on the air Sept. 22 we follow ‘Restless Gun’ and ’Wells Fargo’.” •,-- _ - ■ Stone Age men lived for some 9,000 years in Russell Gave, near Bridgeport, Ala.
