DECATUR COACHES (Continued from page one) course they have the integrity and ability to be outstanding. "However, I would like to think that perhaps the fellowship and teaching of Lionism has been helpful to them, and in some small measure aided them to achieve the heights which they have attained. “The Lions club of Decatur is proud of these splendid gentlemen —they are proud that they have taught clean living, and even more important have lived and conducted their affairs in a manner that has set an example for our youth. “As I have said, we have entrusted to these men our youth—and these men have kept that trust and through their teaching have turned out good athletes and good citizens. “And so it is with pride that I salute Lion ’ Andrews, Lion Dorwin, and Lion Worthman, and present you with these service awards issued by Lions International for your outstanding work as educators and citizens.” Hill then presented each wife with a bouquet of roses. The team then ran off the field for the half-time break. Jack Heller, past letterman and member of the Booster club, then announced the gifts of a flagpole by General Electric Co., represented by George Auer, and a flag from Post 43, American Legion, represented by Robert G. Smith, commander, and Frank Detter, to the Decatur school system, represented by W. Guy Brown, in honor of the three special guests and all past coaches. Following this the Legion color guard advanced the flag to the flagpole, and as all lights were turned out. and a spot focused on the flagpole, the Decatur high school band played the national anthem while the flag was raised. Rev. Edgar P. Schmidt, pastor of the Zion Lutheran church, gave the benediction. The band then marched off the field, and the second half of the! game started. Before the game.started, return-! ing lettermen from past years > were introduced by teams. Fathers of the players sat in a specially reserved front section, I wearing the numbers of theirl ■ player sons. They also introduced at the half. , Trade in a good town — Decatut

I " III— —I. ■ n ■— Social Security Quiz 'Answers Many Queries
(Editor’s note: Do you have any questions about Social Security? We all do, don’t we? Send any question you might have to Social Security Quiz, c/o Daily Democrat. You’ll find your answer in this column, which is published each Saturday.) 1. I was paid S3BOO in wages in 1957. I also worked as a selfemployed radio and T.V. repairman and my net profit was $825 last year. I have paid the social security tax on my wages. Do I have to pay on my net profit also? The maximum earnings covered by social security in one year are $4200. If your total earnings in 1956 were $4625 and the social security tax was deducted from wages of S3BOO, you must still pay the tax on S4OO of your net earnings from self-employment. 2. I was told at the social security office that I was not eligible for retirement payments because I did not have enough social security credit. Can I have the tax that was deducted from my wages refunded? There is no provision in the law which permits a refund of the social security taxes paid on earnings covered by social security if you do not have enough work under the law to be insured. 3. I am self-employed and made enough net profit to report my earnings for social security. Because my earnings are small, however, I do not have to pay any Federal income tax. How do I pay the social security tax? You will have to file a Federal income tax return —complete the Schedule C and SE—and pay the self-employment tax. even if you are not required to pay any income tax. 4. Before my father died last December, he was receiving retirement payments from both railroad retirement and social security. When my mother applied for her widow’s benefit she was told that she cannot receive both benefits. Is this correct? Survivors of a wage earner can be entitled under one system only, either railroad retirement or social security, even though the wage earner may have been entitled during his lifetime under both. HowI ever, the earnings from both rail- ) road and social security are comi bined to arrive at the amount pay- ! able to the survivor. 5. My father died in California last month, and I had to pay his ! burial expenses because he left no I other survivors. I don’t know if he ever worked under social security, but he had a social security card. How can I find out if there is any death payment available? You should inquire promptly at
your nearest social security office. Take your father's social security card with you. TRiey can check the records and determine if any earn- : ings had been reported under his : name and number. 6. I rent my farm cash rent, but : I pay the taxes and other upkeep i expenses. Do I pay the social se- : curity tax on the income I receive : frbm this farm? No. The social security tax is paid only on earnings received from work covered by the law. No social security tax is due on mere rental income. 7. I am receiving wife’s benefits on my husband's security record. How will his earnings as- ' feet my benefit and how will my ; earnings affect his? When a retired worker has a : benefit check withheld for a certain month, because of his earnings, no : checks are payable for this same month to any dependents whose benefits are based on his account. , However, the earnings of a person who is receiving benefits as a dependent, affect only his benefit check. Therefore, your earnings would affect only your own benefit, but your husband's would affect both his own and your benefit check. 8. I am 67 years old and receiving social security retirement benefits. Besides other part-time work, I work as $ janitor in my church, which is not covered by social security. Does the salary I receive from the church count in the SI2OO I may earn while receiving all my monthly checks. Yes. Earnings from work of any kind, whether or not covered by social security must be counted in deciding the number of* monthly benefit checks due you for a year. di J fit* e w • J® !
