Harry S. Truman In Fort Wayne Tonight Former President At Democrat Rally FORT WAYNE, Ind. (UPDFormer President Harry S. Truman comes here today for an expected renewal of his “give ’em hell” type of political campaigning. The 74-year-old Missourian from Independence will address an Indiana Democratic rally tonight. It will be his first major speech of the 1958 election campaign—but not the last. Truman will fly to Omaha Friday to continue his politicking as principal speaker at a midwest conference of Democrats. An estimated 15,000 persons will gather in the Fort Wayne Coliseum tonight to hear the bluntspeaking Truman taunt the Republicans for the GOP’s puny showing in Maine's last bellwether election and other barbs of partisan comment. Boost For Hartke The ex-president will give a financial and psychological boost to the Hoosier Democrats, who are backing Evansville Mayor Vance Hartke against the Indiana Gov. Harold W. Handley in a race for the seat of Sen. William E. Jenner. Jenner is retiring. A number of the Democratic faithful—estimated at 2.ooo—have tossed SIOO bills into the party * till to attend a dinner preceding the rally. The admission to the rally itself is free. Party chairman throughout the state’s 92 counties have been working for weeks to organize caravans of Democrats to boost the Allen County rally. Alex Camp-

bell, chairman of the host organization, said “this will be the largest fund-raising dinner in the history of the Democrat party in Indiana.” Campbell, former district attorney and Department of Justice official was jubilant over the Maine showing of the Democrats. He echoed the new note that has been heard lately in the voices of the “out” party in Hoosier politics: “Maine indicates the Democratic trend which began in Wisconsin with Proxmire’s (Sen. William holding up and continuing across the country. In my opinion Indiana will go Democratic.” News Conference Set Currently, all state offices and 11 of the 13 Hoosier senatorial and congressional seats in Washington are filled by Republicans. In addition to Hartke, Truman will share platform space tonight with W. Robert Fleming, the Democrat battling incumbent 4th District Rep E. Ross Adair of Fort Wayne. Truman was expected to arrive early this afternoon at the Fort Wayne airport and go through an evening familiar to the veteran campaigner. A reception given by the Young Democrats organization, and a brief news conference fill the space before dinner. National Chairman Paul Butler planned to attend the rally, as well as all state and district party officials and state and congreswill be Truman’s close friend and former national party chairman Frank McKinney, Indianapolis banker. McKinney’s secretary said: “It’s not because there is any rift between Mr. Truman and Mr. McKinney. They are still the best of friends. But Mr. McKinney just underwent an operation and is not able to go to Fort Wayne.” Eddie Fisher And Debbie Separated Joint Announcement Is Made By Couple HOLLYWOOD (UPD — Debbie Reynolds says she still is very much jn love with her husband. Eddie Fisher, despite their decision to separate. “I’m still very much in love with Eddie,” the petite 27-year-old actress said Wednesday shortly after announcing jointly with her husband that they were separating. Conferring for hours with their attorneys, the couple emerged with a brief, bleak statement that the marriage Hollywood once considered the “ideal” wedding of “the young couple next door" was threatened. “A separation exists between Debbie and Eddie,” the statement reported. “No further action is being taken at this time.” Did they plan to get a divorce? What was the cause of their trouble—Elizabeth Taylor? No Answers Now These and other questions like them designed to let the world peek into the private life of a famous couple went unanswered. At least for the present. Friends said Debbie went to Palm Springs. Eddie was reported staying with a friend in Hollywood. and Elizabeth wasn’t at her rented Bel Air home. Returning to her West Los Angeles home after the separation announcement, Miss Reynolds told reporters she had nothing to add to the joint announcement. Then, she said she still loved Eddie. The speculation continued as to what caused the break-up of the couple’s marriage which began Sept. 26, 1955, at Grossinger, N.Y., with vows they would have six children and “never be apart.” Deny Being In Love Gbssips wondered if Miss Taylor. lovely widow of flamboyant Mike Todd, wasn’t the third side of a marital triangle when Fisher squired her around New York night clubs. "Stupid. . .garbage.” Those were the terms the raven-haired actress used to brush off newsmen who asked if she were falling in love with Fisher. But friends said Miss Taylor did not feel her dates with Fisher had anything to do with the dispute between him and his wife because “they have not been getting along.” Boyish-faced Eddie, 30, denied he was in love with Elizabeth or that she was in love with him.
