Purdue Shows Potentiality Os Improvement LAFAYETTE, Ind. (UPI) — Purdue’s football team potentially is better than the 1957 club, which won five of its last six games, Coach Jack Mollenkopf said today, but he wants to find internal leadership to get the most out of his men. “I think the ability is there,” he said. “But we need leadership within the squad and I hope some boy suddenly takes it on. Last year we had two real good leaders in Niel Habig and John Jardine, and we need an aggressive, ornery type like them." The Boilermakers will be big, deep and experienced. Last year Mollenkopf substituted two complete elevens with little difference in ability. This year, he said, “I think we can go with three teams in and platoon." Weak in the Middle “We’re not as steady now as we were a year ago at this time, but this team should be better. We lost the middle of our line, the center and two guards, and a halfback, but it |eems like we ought to be able to'replace them. We re almost double in every position.” Mollenkopf said the weakness would be at guard and center where he has mostly rookie strength. Sophomore Philip Kardasz, rated the best linebacker on the squad, could surprise at center and Ron Maltony and Skip Ohl could help at guards. Mollenkopf rates two quarterbacks of almost equal ability. Bob Spoo and Ross Fichtner. Tbm Barnett, Joe Kulbacki and sophomore Jim Tiller, the fastest man on the squad whb' could be a “break-away” back, are scrapping at left half, veterans Clyde Washington and Len Wilson run 1-2 at right half, and Bob Jarus was expected to furnish steady power at fullback. “I’d like to find a first team,” he said, “and certainly on our last scrimmage, some of the guys on the third team belong on the first team.” Purdue Has Tough Schedule Dick Brooks, Tom Franckhouser and sophomore Manzie Winters, who has an 87-inch reach and sure hands to be an adept pass reciver, rank as top ends, and Nick Mumley, Wayne Farmer and Gene Selawski, all 240-pounds or more, aje JtoP tickles. ’ “We haven't worked on defense, but we’ve always had a pretty good defense and we’re going to start working on it today,” he addd. “I think we’ll have good depth. “We’d like to be a good running team but we’re not. Passing should be good. Spoo and Fichtner throw pretty well and we’ve got good receivers in Brooks, Winters and Franckhouser, all better than average.” Mollenkopf rated Ohio State, Michigan State and Wisconsin as the top Big Ten teams and said the Boilermakers’ schedule would be difficult because he must play all three plus Notre Dame, Illinois and Rice.
