Mail Conduct Code To Pupils' Parents Code Drown Up By Group Os Parents WASHINGTON, Ind. (UPD — When a question abput conduct comes up during this sch6ol year, the parents of Washington preteenagers can find the answer in a pocket-sized rule book. Copies of a “conduct code” for children in the 6th, 7th and Bth grades x>f all Washington public and parochial schools are being mailed to parents this week. The code sets rules for parties, dates, dress, general behavior, home study, use of the telephone. A grodp of parents who drew up the code hope it will serve to make consistent the rules under which all parents will expect their is "to guide and coordiniate parsure on reluctant parents by their youngsters seeking certain privileges on the grounds that “everybody does it.” One Baisc Rule The book establishes one basic rule for all parents: “Parents should know where their sons and daughters are while away from home, what they are doing, and with whom they are spending theirtime. Parents should also know what time their young people return home.” It says the purpose of the rules is “to guide and coordinate parchildren’s conduct.” , “It is not the desire,” the book says, “of the formulators of this code to take away all provileges code to take away all privileges ental decisions governing their' children to live, thus avoiding presgiven to children by their parents, nor is it the desire to dictate to parents about how their children should be raised, but rather an agreement between parents to meet situations which arise daily concerning the children.” The book says parents and children should talk over allowances and limit parties for 7th and Bth graders to weekends and holidays. Children should never “crash” parties or have dates. They should wear “proper dress” for school, “sensible and respectable” clothes to sports events. Girls shouldn't wear lipstick, nylons or silk hose. Repect Their Elders Children should respect their, elders and the rights and prop- i erty of others, another rule says.| They should spend at least an; hour a week doing home work. ! Parents should place a five-! minute time limit on phone calls “in consideration of others in the home and those on party lines." , ——.— — . i

When it was ready for distribution, townspeople offered through the Washington Daily Times a copy to any group of parents which might be interested in starting such a movement in their own communities.
