Allen Teter, 67, Tipton, a retired minister and former superintendent of ; the Fort Wayne District of the Methodist Church, collapsed and died of a heart attack Tuesday while playing golf at Windy Hill Country Club hdre. He had served as a pastor or supply pastor at Goshen, Winchester, Largo, Markle, Tippecanoe, Fort Wayne, Huntington, Atlanta, Middletown and Gas City. Hartke Continues Attack On Handley Jenner Stooges Are Lashed By Hartke CLAY CITY, Ind. *UPI) —Vance Hartke, Democratic nominee for U. S. senator, said Tuesday night that Governor Handley and Sen. William E. Jenner were not concerning themselves with "the welfare of our children.” Hartke attacked Republican support of a state committee report that only 53 Indiana students could qualify by "ability and need” for science scholarships. _ “I believe I could find that many in Clay County,” he said. 'fi Hartke said Jenner’s move to exclude Indiana from participating in a federal aid to education program had the backing of Republican Senate nominee Handley and State School Supt. Wilbur Young, whom he called Jenner’s "Statehouse stooges.” Hartke said Handley’s use of the committee findings to support his stand against federal aid to education shows that “the ruling clique of the Republican party are not concerned with the welfare of our children or the needs of our state and nation.” He also charged Indiana, Republicans “are more interested in a moment of glory in the spotlight of national publicity.”

Virginia's Catholic Schools Integrated Begin Fifth Year Os Desegregated Classes ARLINGTON, Va. (UPD— Virginia's Catholic parochial schools will begin their fifth year of desegregated classes today. Church officials don’t expect any trouble. Some white parents have withdrawn their children from parochial schools. But a spokesman for the Catholic diocese of Richmond said there has been no “massive resistance” to integration. The statewide Catholic school system includes 56 elementary schools, with an anticipated enrollment of more than 28,000, and 20 high schools, with more than 3,000 students. Msgr. J.P. Flaherty, diocesan superintendent of schools, said no racial census of the parochial school? has been made in the past three years. He said he personally knew of about 35 Negro children enrolled last year in a Norfolk high school with a total enrollment of about 400. In one elementary school, there were 30 Negro children out of an enrollment of 120. These are unusual situations, however. Only a relatively small fraction of Virginia’s 125,000 Catholics are Negroes, and most of the parochial schools continue to have all or nearly all white students despite the “open door” integration policy. There also are some parochial schools with all - Negro enrollments, in predominantly Negro residential sections of Virginia cities. “If there are any colored Catholics in a parish, they may enter a white school there as a matter of course.” Father Flaherty said. “There is no compulsion for them to enter or refrain from entering.” The diocese of Virginia announced this policy in early May, 1954 _ two weeks before the Supreme Court handed down its historic ruling against segregation in public schools. ' The Supreme Court ruling does not affect parochial schools. But the Catholic church has been pushing for desegregation of all its parishes and church-related institutions on the ground that racial barriers are inconsistent with Christan teaching. Father Flaherty was asked how Virginia's white Catholics reacted to narochial school integration. “I happen to know that a lot of white parents didn’t like it.” he said. “A few white children were withdrawn from school. But there was no overt resistance.” Over 2,500 Daily Democrats are sold and delivered in Decatur each day.
