Nearly 600 Methodist men will attend the eighth annual institute in a dozen church-related subjects at DePauw University Sept 5-7. —**OThe beloved mayor of Evansville, Vance Hartke, has pointed out that even with an increase in so-called workers in the highway department, little road improvement work has been accomplished. All of us in Adams county remember how the present road commissioner insulted a prominent local Republican doing a good job for the former Republican state administration, accepted his resignation, and then turned right around and hired more persons at higher wages to do the same job. Although the stateemployed workers are organized in a huge patronage machine to force “High-Tax Harold” Handley on the people of Indiana, and powerful behind-the-shadow lobbies have already given a million dollars to his campaign fund, Hoosier voters will not be misled by the constant dinning of Republican propaganda. Too many jobless workers will know who is responsible, taxing away the purchasing power which made full employment possible. Both W. Robert Fleming and Vance Hartke will carry Adams county this fall by substantial majorities.

While many are hoping for atomic power some day, the facts are that steam-generated power will probably remain the cheapest, most effective energy converter for some time. Fossil fuels (coal, gas, oil) will help hold down fuel bills. Large electric companies, either private or TVA, located near rivers where cheap coal is easily obtainable, have new units much more efficient than Decatur's old generating plant. Few people in Decatur argue with the fact that we can no longer manufacture our power more cheaply than we can purchase it. The main question seems to be, should Decatur purchase the power, and make a profit, or sell the power lines, and buy street and school lighting, receiving only taxes in return? The former would require a big investment right now; the fatter would probably be used to •pay off the sewage treatment plant bonds by transfer of funds. Each Decatur resident should make up his own mind. Undoubtedly most rural residents favor outright, immediate sale. Most city residents would probably lose from a few cents to a dollar a month by sale. No one can say positively what the future holds for cither method. What's your preference?
