Creamed Comments on the Sunday school lesson, justice in daily work, exodus 20:9, 10; Ecclesiastics 9:10; Ephesians 4:28; Colossians 3:22-4:1, for Sunday, September 7, 1958. This lesson deals with the injustices arising in conection with •the employment of men, and with the standards which the Bible sets to guide us as we work. Vs. 9, 10. “Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: , . . But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor the stranger that is within thy gates: “It is as much a violation of God's law to fail in keeping his work days as it is in failing to keep his rest day. Life is made up of alternate times of work and rest and God has ordained both. Jesus said, “My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.” Work is an indispensable part of a dignified life. A day of rest gives an opportunity to enrich our soul life by worship. Vs 10. “Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do. do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest. “We are born into a certain environment and operate within the limits of our powers and gifts. Within these limits we should find our course of life, and having found it, apply ourselves diligently. We owe ourselves the duty

of good workmanship. Heaven is so different from earth, that what people do there cannot be compared to what we do on earth. Vs. 28 “Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour. working with his hands the things which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.” The early church was welcoming into its membership many from the criminal class to whom theft was the ordinary means of livelihood. The eighth commandment is K-peated as a part of Christian morality. Honest labour enables a man to provide for himself, his family, and to whatever degree possible, contribute to the needs of others. V. 22. “Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God.” A large part of the population were slaves, many of whom belongs to the early church and were debellious against their masters. Neither Paul nor Jesus attempt to abolish the institution of slavery at that time, but rather to create the kind of persona] religion out of which social change results. ’No one should make the pleasing of another man his chief concern. The ! servant who is God-fearing will be a conscientous worker. Vs. 23. 24. “And whatsoever ye do. do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; . . . Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.” Paul urges the slaves to see their work in the light of a service to God rather than as drudgery in the hands of their masters, enduring whatever is irritating with patience, in the assurance that the joys of the new age are at hand. V 25. “But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons.” A negligent worker receives a penalty instead of the reward given the diligent worker. V. 1. "Masters, give unto your servants that which is just and" equal; knowing that ye also have a Master in heaven.” Paul cautions masters to be fair to their servants since God deals with them according as they deal with their servants. The masters, even as their slaves, are servants of God. Obligations between .master and servant are reciprocal and each should serve the other.
I; -'X-Way Edward Bok. well known editor indicated his philosophy regarding the proper attitude toward work as follows: "To work for the love of work and to finish what you start while Others idle around you and leave the-clay’s job unfinished. To do the thing, at hand that is waiting to be done, instead of looking around for something else to do. To put more into the world than you take out of it and give everyne more than you get. To believe that you were put into the world to take part in its activities for the purpose of sharing in its accomplishments. To have the conviction and let no one shake it that there is one real factor in life, and that is Truth.” The Christian can only find satisfaction where he found salvation. Action is the only true test of ability. What some people call common sense can be a lot of nonsense.
