HARTKE (Contlnueg rrom page one) _ Handley, his opponent for the United States senate seat, a “ruthless political boss,” and prophised that ‘‘we are going to win this election by the largest majority in history.” He reported that although the Democratics lost Wells County by 1,500 voters in 1956, he had heard the prediction that the Democrats will win the county this year by at least 1,200. Cites Broken Promises Hartke noted that promises mean nothing to Republicans, that although they promised prosperity without inflation in 1952, the reverse now is true. He also noted that Indiana now has 155,300 unemployed, that the

recession picture is not clearing, that we have a continuing higuer cost of living. The senator candidate noted also that although the GOP promised peace, the United States is in serious trouble internationally.
Relative to Indiana’s stagnancy, Fleming pointed out that this state’s "inaction in participating with other states in highway construction, education, health, library and other national programs has brought great economic loss to our state through nearsighted views of the Republican party.” Fleming noted that “their leaders have taken pride in their speeches and statements that Indiana can live within itself . . .and through misleading statements and assumptions Hoosiers are misled on the true facts of Indiana's lack of progess when compared with other states.” GOP Shortsightedness In citing further GOP shortsightedness, the candidate for Fourth District representative pointed out that:
Indiana ranks 46th among the states in matching federal funds for construction of highways under ■the newly-passed >31,000,000,000 program. # Indiana had the worst record of any state in participation in the vocational rehabilitation program. Indiana ranked third from the bottom in participation in the crippled children’s program in fiscal 1957, the last year for which complete statistics on the program are available. Indiana ranked second from the bottom in participation in the

child welfare program the same year. Indiana used none of the $60,000 in federal funds available for aid to mentally retarded children, instead taking money from the state’s already meager child welfare program. Indiana ranked 43rd among the states in participation in the federal hospital construction program. Indiana is one of four states which does not participate in the program to aid the totally ,and permanently disabled. Indiana is one of the stated failing to participate in the fed-erally-sponsored program to train practical nurses. Indiana fifth from the bottom of all States in ala to dependent children. BRINK (Contmuentrcm P»"fe one) Chiang Kai-shek toward “new armed provocations” against Red China. East German Communists said Washington was playing with "atomic fire.” A government spokesman said several sections of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Overseas Affairs Commission already were quitting Taipei and that the Ministry of Interior will begin j moving some sections on Monday as urged by the premier. Curfew Imposed The Nationalists clamped a fivehour curfew on the major cities of Formosa during the night and police and soldiers carried out a house-by-house search for Commu- , nist agents. For security -reasons ! there was no announcement of the number arrested. Communist shore batteries bombarded the Quegioy Islands for the seventh straight day while Peiping Radio broadcast surrender demands around the clock to the Nationalist garrisons on Quemoy and on Matsu, 120 miles to the north. The United States rushed another giant aircraft carrier to the Formosa Straits from Honolulu and repeated its warning to Peiping it would be “folly” for them to carry out their new threat of invasion. Another warning to the Communists was voiced in Seoul. Korea, by U. S. Army Secretary Wilber M. Brucker who advised Russia and Communist China to heed the warnings of U.S. government leaders against carrying out aggressive action in the Formosa Strait. Pursuit Rule Relaxed Authoritative sources in Washington disclosed U.S. Pacific forces have relaxed their “hot pursuit” boundary line and would chase attacking Communist planes right up to the Chinese mainland. The Defense Ministry said the Reds hit the Quemoy Islands with

only about 400 shells Thursday, the lowest number since they began their bombardments on Saturday. But they lobbed over a handful of shells during the night and then hit Tatan and Erhtan islands with 7,000 shells a few hours later. It appeared the Communists were now concentrating on purely military targets, including the big Quemoy Island airstrip, in an apparent preparation for invasion. But Quemoy's big underground rock and concrete fortificiations were reported undamaged. r NOTICE OF ADMINISTRATION Estate No. 53N7 In the Adams Circuit Court of Adams County, Indiana, Notice is hereby al ven that Martha G, Heller was on the 20 day of August, 1»58, appointed: Executrix of the will of Dick I).
