Negroes who applied for admis- ■ sion to white schools following desegregation orders. At an earlier hearing board members acknowledged that some Negroes were rejected for white schools because of race. Hoffman was watching closely the Arkansas developments in helping him reach a decision in the Norfolk desegregation case. He said he would not order desegregation’ should the high court 1 approve Federal Judge Harry 1 Lemley’s “cooling off” decision in Little Rock. Lemley granted a delay in integration at Central until j mid-term 1961, then was overruled by the Bth Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Louis. It is about 120 miles west of Formosa. Tungtin itself is a tiny, rockbound island less than half a mile in diameter. In Communist hands it would control the sea approaches to the Nationalist bases in the Quemoy complex. The battle for Tungting erupted into a series of thre naval engagements, the last of which lasted until early this morning—more than 4<4 hours of continuous fighting in one of the heaviest naval engagements fought in the Strait of Formosa. Hospital Ship Sunk During this battle two Nationalist hospital ships — landing ships evacuating the wounded from Quemoy to Formosa — blundered into the area.
