Blue gills are still hard to catch in northeastern Indiana, according to the conservation department, and Jack Hurst, local conservation officer. Bass fishing is improving. Crickets, nightcrawlers and minnows seem to be catching the most. o o Things could be a whole lot worse. Decatur’s possible tax rates of $5.92 for Decatur-Wash-ington and $5.96 for Decatur-Root don't seem quite so bad when you see Bluffton’s proposed $7.61 rate: Their present rate is $6.68. The increase asked is almost one dollar. It should be relatively easy to attract business to Decatur with our lower rate. o o Did you know that freedom of the press is guaranteed by the first amendment to the constitution, the same amendment which guarantees you the right to attend the church of your choice? While you cannot prevent any newspaper from printing what it feels is news, after it is printed the newspaper is responsible. Newspapers can be sued for libel if they write something untrue and damaging about someone who is not in the public news. If the person written about is actually a celebrity or politician, the right of freedom to comment usually overrides the individual’s right to privacy. In the 1920'5, Henry Ford wanted to be the Republican nominee for the pre siden cy, and a large*-city newspaper wrote several stories calling him a Communist. He sued, and collected 1 cent damages for his trouble, although he asked for half a million dollars.

Van Wert county people can be proud of their safety record which has shown steady improvement during the past three years. Property damage is down from $81,161 in 1956 to $57,030, in 1958, first half figures only being compared. Accidents have decreased from 148 to 125. Deaths, injuries and property damage are all down. That’s a fine record! Keep it going! o o County schools will open September 2 this year, and the school buses will again be stopping on county roads, and on state and federal highways in the county. Keep in mind that you must stop when a school bus stops. You cannot pass a school bus when it is loading or unloading children This means whether you are approaching it from the front or rear. A thoughtless moment may cost a child's life. o o To meet the growth in demand for power in its territory, TV A needs 800,000 kilowatts of new generating power each year. Since the Eisenhower administration took office in 1953, no new funds have been appropriated. Last year the Senate voted such a bill 61 to 20, and this year the House subcommittee considering it has approved it without the President’s crippling restrictions. TV A needs the appropriation and the Tennessee valley needs the power it would produce. Powerful forces are trying to stop it, however, despite TVA's quarter century of successful contribution to the welfare, prosperity, and defense of our country.
