Public Works Bill Passes House Today Measure Designed To Help In Easing Off Unemployment WASHINGTON <UPI) — The House today approved a compromise $1,118,128,835 public works appropriation bill designed to help ease unemployment. By voice vote, the House accepted and sent to the Senate a conference agreement reached by members of the House and Senate in two weeks of closed meetings. The action moved Congress another step closer to adjournment, which is expected in the next two days. The public works bill appropriated money for the Corps of Engineers, Bureau of Reclamation and Tennessee Valley Authority for current fiscal year. The final total was $41,787,000 below a measure previously passed by the Senate. But it was $40,291,635 higher than the House-passed bill and contained about $41,000,000 more than President Eisenhower had asked. Under the conference agreement, approximately $813,887,500 will be appropriated for construction, maintenance and planning for the Corps of Engineers, $287,391,375 for the Reclamation Bureau and $16,850,000 for the TWA. The Senate, meanwhile, scheduled a vote on a controversial bill to modify recent Supreme Court decisions. Senate Democratic leader Lyndon 6. Johnson announced Tuesday night the Senate would take up the Jenner-Butler bill, which was aimed at restricting the Supreme Court in anti-subversive, contempt of Congress, and antiCommunist Smith Act cases. Johnson said a roll call vote on a motion to table the measure would come after two or three hours of debate. The bill was opposed by a large group of senators and~ehance of passage was considered poor. Pass Mallory Bill The Senate capped a 14-hour. 16minute legislative day shortly after midnight by passing 65-12 a bill to modify a 1957 Supreme Court decision that freed a convicted rapist ' because his arraignment was delayed. The so-called Mallory bill de J dared confessions would be admissible in court trials even if there were a reasonable delay in arraignment — if the confessions were admissible on all other grounds. The House passed a bill which would simply outlaw the right of courts to nullify a confession because of any arraignment delay—reasonable or unreasonable. The House either can accept the Senate changes or seek a SenateHous conference to work out diffrences in the two bills. NOTICE TO TAXPAYERS FOR ADDITION.A I.
