DECATUR (Continued from page ona) moved to the United States in 1868, with his family. His father, Christopher Kirsch, had been to the United States before, working on the Great Lakes, in the copper mines, and as a steamship fireman, when he was 20. Returning to his homeland, he married Catherine Stern and operated a mercantile store until he moved to the United States, to settle in Preble township. Young Kirsch worked on his father’s farm and attended Adams county schools until 1882, when he decided to learn the carpenter’s trade. After following carpentry in surrounding cities for 11 years, Peter Kirsch established the mill which has become a Decatur landmark, with a reputation for doing fine custom work. The age of inventions, new-fang-led things, came in as the planing mill was well established, and the factory expanded to make washing machines for about two years, after Kirsch patented a washing machine. Between this time and the turn of the century, the cider mill was installed. In 1905, came the feed grinder and corn mill as the custom workmanship done at the mill became feed grinding in addition to woodworking. And the business “venture proved successful from the start,” according to Snow's history of Adams county. Perhaps versatility was one of the characteristics that made the mill successful. For after the washing machine venture, Kirsch made several other things outside of the woodworking line at the mill. And when High continued the business in 1948, all things in the way of woodworking came out of the mill; all things with all kinds of designs, for when there was no tool to cut the design he wanted, high has remade one or constructed a new one. In 1913, to come back to the first years of the mill, one of those newfangled things came out of the factory, again custom made to suit the craftsman. It was the original . Kirsch automobile. Before the year !1913, Kirsch had worked on several other automobiles, but reassembling them to suit himself, producing a rebuilt Auburn among others. 1 And for some time, he handled the Metz car, a revolutionary auto, with a new kind of transmission, but which proved trustworthy in taking a local doctor. D. D. Clark, who had a reputation of coming Johnny - on - the - spot, whenever ' called. ? But the original Kirsch auto was just that: Kirsch made it his own. buying the parts from manufac- . turers (several are still in busi- ( nessl and designing the rest himI self. The motor was a Continental I make, the transmission a Warner. ■ The Bimel wheels came from Portland. The body was hand made, the lenders being riveted and finished by hand. It was upholstered by a firm called the Decatur Carriage works, operated by Wilbur Porter, where Zintsmaster’s motor sales is now located. It was a new operation for the carriage works, whose main work was upholstering buggies. The original finish was of 12 coats of varnish, and elaborately striped, where panels would be placed in today'i cars. Comfortably seating five passengers, the car had included not the lates, but all new conveniences, from auxiliary lights to an air compressor right on the motor for pumping up flat tires in a hurry. Take the lights, for instance. Occasionally, when the driver would be far away from home, he could easily run out of fuel for the Prest-o-lite gas lights. When the gas ran out, all that was necessary was to turn xm the auxiliary kerosene lights to see him safely home. Four cylinders under its hood, the Kirsch was a super car there too. One set of two cylinders was powered by magnetoes, one by a battery and distributor. Why? Although invented by the German Daimler in 1899, magnetoes were

touchy things in those days. And the driver wouldn't be stranded in the Kirsch car if they failed. He was sure to be safe, for he could rely on the battery-distributor combination. t . And this arr compressor “was the payoff,” postmaster Leo Kirsch son of the founder of the mill, smiles when he reminisces about the auto. When a tire went flat, the driver would take off the quick detachable rims, take the tire out, patch the tube, and use the air compressor to pump up the tube again. Attached right to the motor, the air compressor was an attachment that helped to put the Kirsch car in the class of custom made autos done by craftsmen, the only ones of their kind. When the mH! was sold in 1948, to Ernest High, the auto was soki to Lester E. Sheets. Later, about 1955, the car was sold to an antique collector. At last reports, the auto, like the wonderful one-hoss shay, was still running fine. One more Invention, for the convenience of fishermen who didn't want to risk their hands in the

toothy mouths of fish like pike, was made in the mid-thirties to the forties. It was called a fish-mouth spreader, and opened the catch’s mouth wide when inserted, making it safe for the fisherman. In the meantime, the main business of making anything in the way of woodworking and planing went on, for 55 years, for Kirsch, until the planing mill was sold to Ernest High, a mechanic from Fort Wayne; learning some of the business of the establishment from Kirsch, and teaching himself the woodworking business, he built the business up.
