Creamed Comments on the Sunday School Lesson, Justice Among Nations, Micah 4:1-7; Acts 10:3435; Ephesians 2:13-16, for Sunday, August 24. The first portion of the lesson deals with the prophecy of Micah who lived some 700 years before Christ. Micah rebukes the people for their corruption and idolatry and prophesies concerning the future when Christ would be enthroned as Prince of Peace. The second half of the lesson emphasizes God's impartiality as a judge and the fact that He is no respecter of persons. The lesson concludes with Paul's note of peace predicting a time when mankind will be one in its allegiance to Christ, who died to reconcile men, one to another, and to God. Vs. 1. ‘ But in the last days it shall come to pass, that the mountain of the house o’s the Lord shall be established in the tdb of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills; and people shall flow unto it.” There were threats of war and severe judgment for the people of Micah's time, but he prophesies the final glory of the chosen people when the temple would be restored to a higher prominence than the surrounding mountains and hills. The “last days” refer to the days of the Messiah when the church of God would be established." Vs. 2. “And many nations shall come, and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, and to the house of the God of Jacob and he will teach us of his

ways, and we will walk in his paths; for the law shall go forth of Zion, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.” Micah predicted the day when people of many nations would voluntarily turn to the tpie religion and be instructed in its teachings and practices. Jerusalem' and the temple of Jehovah on Mt. Zion fulfilled their destiny since they stand for the knowledge of the one true God, his ways and his law. V 3. “And he shall judge among many people and rebuke strong nations afar off; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks: nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.” Since all nations are pictured as serving Jehovah, they- will submit their disputes to God •as judge, and there will be no more occasion for war; consequently the instruments at war will be turned into the tools of peace. » Vs. 4, 5. “But they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree; and none shall make them afraid: for the mouth of the Lord of hosts hath spoken it. .. For all people will walk every one in the name of his god. and we will walk in the name of the Lord our God for ever and ever.” Social security is prophesied as the lot of everyone with no need for fear. The secret of this security will consist in the consciousness that God has ordained peace. The vine and fig tree are invariably found in the Moorish patio and the family grows up under this shade. Israel will be loyal to Jenovah even amid idoltary. < Vs. 6,7. “In that day saith the Lord, will I assemble her that hal-I teth, and I gather her that is dri- j ven out, and her that I have afflicted; . . . And I will make her that halted a remnant ,and her that was cast far off a strong nation: and the Lord shall regin over them in mount Zion from hen-. ceforth, even for ever.” Jehovah, would care for the underprivileged and afflicted of the chosen people during their capivity and dispersion. and, from this remnant that embraced the true religion, there would arise a strong nation. Vs. 34 , 35. “Then Peter opened his mouth, and said. Os a truth I perceive; that God is no respecter of person. . . But in every nation he that feareth him. and worketh righteousness, is accepted- with him.” The fact God chose Israel for a special role in history does not imply rejection of people of other nationalities as indicated in Cornelius’ conversion and his acceptance as a Gentile, into the Christian brotherhood. Peter was amazed at this fact. Vs. 13-16. “But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. . . For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; . . . Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man ,so making peace: ... And that he might reconcile both unto God by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:” Christ died for all men, not just his own people. Jesus destroyed the ordinances that separated Jews from their' gentile neighbors .and by his death; united all men at the foot of the cross. Religion should be our steering wheel, not just a spare tire to be used in case of a blow-out. The real power of a locomative isn’t in its whistle or the noise it makes. ; - There is more to life than increasing its speed.

Clericus Says Clericus says: God is the Lord of history and as such will finally win over the world to lasting peace by bringing together the nations in repentance and in a spirit mellowed for peace. In God all men can find the spirit which can make internationalism not a dream but i a reality. World peace must be based on justice and brotherhood among all God’s children. The dream of a warless world will not die, for it is too deeply ingrained within the human heart to ever perish. Lesson Prayer: Dear Father, we thank Thee, that if we are at peace with Thee, we can be at peace with ourselves and at peace ; with others. We thank Thee for the ; gift of Thy Son, Jesus Christ, who ■ died on a cross to put us at peace : with Thee. Grant that we may real7ize That, even if wars and in justI ices do exist today, Thou art the i Ruler yet, and that ours is a nation whose builder and maker is God, the essence of all wisdom and justice. fDiSCUSSion on R Questions Discussion questions on the Sunday school lesson, justice among nations, for Sunday, August 24. j 1. How do national problems today compare with those of Mi- ! ch’s time? 12. To what degree should world peace be a major concern of the church? 3. How can Christians help to establish a just and durable peace in a world like ours? 4. What are some steps that can be taken kftvard greater understanding between America and the common people of the world? 5. How can Christians help climate barriers that block the i ideal of the unity of mankind in i Christ? Oup Preacher ■A Our Anxieties “What does your anxiety do? It does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow; but it empties today of its strength. It does not make you escape the evil; it makes you unfit to cope with it when it comes. It does not bless tomorrow, and it rebs today. For every day has its i own burden. God gives us power I to bear all the sorrow of His makjing: but He does not give us the i power to bear the sorrows of our own making, which the anticipation of sorrow’most assuredly is.” lan Maclaren. Even a billy goat knows enough to use his head. If you live only for tomorrow, you miss today. Many have an aim -in life but never pull the trigger. It is easy to drift if you lost sight of the landmark.

V "< Xz Wav These are times of challenge for the church, and some of the admonitions of the National Council of Churches could well be given serious thought. "We believe that recent events, far from reducing the reality and role of Christian faith, emphasize both its meaning and its necessity. Men and nations are reacting variously, in fear and hope, frustration and boasting, apathy and frenzy. For us, as Christians, our faith and the fellowship of the Church press us to see life steadily and while, to respond neither with complacency nor panic, but with confidence and appropriate action. In this new era, God is still soveregin, Lord of men and nations. God continues to rule over history, with judgment and with grace. These new powers of man have been discovered and developed under the Creator’s sovereignty. We believe that God revealed supremely through Jesus Christ His infinite love for man whom He created in His own image and redeems from sin at so great a price, and that God wills for man to live in love and reconciliation.” Book Review Confessions of an inquiring spirit, Coleridge, Stanford University Press ,is reprinted from the third edition of 1853 and is an important text for students of religious thought in 109th century England. In the form of seven letters to a friend, the Confessions embody Coleridge’s thoughts and beliefs on the inspiration of the Holy Scriptures.

The Church venue Communism Edwin Lahey, chief of The Chicago Daily News, Washington Bureau wrote recently: “When the theory of Communism hits its hardest obstacles, it is the rock of the Christian ethic, rather than the jerry-built fortress of ‘capitalism’ that stops it.” Christian faith and morality can stop Communism in its tracks. This gives us hope. The Communists have changed the world, but the early Christians changed it
I i — and — JI Wisdom There was a lady, it is reported, who had a "planned” marital life. Disregarding biblical principle, she married first, a millionairesecond, an actor; next a minister; and finally, after the third divorce, she chose a mortician. Her philosophy was plain and simple: “One for the money, Two for the show. Three to get ready, And four to go.” In America 25 times as much money is spent annually on the care and rearing of dogs as all Protestant Christians combined give for missionary work. A distinguished British scholar was named to the first professorship in Roman Catholic Studies to be established in Harvard Divinity School's 139-year history. With 11 more years to go in its project of publishing the entire Bible—several verses a day—the Akron Beacon Journal entered its seventh year of the project. All Trans-Canada Airlines, planes will carry Gideon Bibles, says the president of the company. A report received recently from the United States Census Bureau states that two out of every three persons in the nation over 14 years of age regard themselves as protestants and one out of every four as Roman Catholics. Total Protestant population in this age group was reported as 79 million, as compared to 30.7 million Roman Catholics and 3.9 million Jewish. Figures are from a cross-country sampling made last year. too — and they have changed it here and there across 2.000 years of history. It is a challenge to all members of the Christian church to awake to their responsibilities and opportunities in the world crisis and prove themselves capable of holding convictions and acting upon them.
