I Comments J&j On S.S. -arel j Lesson
Creamed Comments on th? Sunday school lesson, justice to‘t**norities, Leviticus 19:33-34? Deuteronomy 24:14-15; Matthew 9:9-13; Galatians 3:28, for Sunday, August 17. This lesson deals with persons who were sojourners in the land, the oppressed, and those who were thought of aS sinners. It attempts to show that those who truly follow Christ must have a genuine concern for all men everywhere. Vs. 33, 34. “And if a stranger sojourn with thee in your land, ye shall not vex him. . . But the stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyelf; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.” Since the Egyptians were once slaves in Egypt with no political rights, they s h o u 1 d have been able to understand the “stranger” who was an outsider, had left his home and established himself in a new community. Experience should teach sympathy for one’s fellowmen, and in ad- > dition, men should prove themselves worthy of the love of their - God- fry-having ~a ToVe" for - - in their midst. Vs. 14, 15. “Thou -shalt not oppress on hired servant that is poor and needy, whether he be of the brethren, or of thy strangers that are in thy land within thy gates: ... At his day thou shalt give him hire. neither shall the sunLgo ’ dowm upon it;-for he

is poor, and setteth his heart upon it: lest he cry against thee unto the Lord, and it be sin unto thee." A hired servant was to be treated fairly, paid promptly regardless of his status. It was the law and the custom that a laborer be paid at the end of each day’s work. This is reflected in Jesus’ parable of the laborers. In the Masaic law God is always on the side of the poor and oppressed. Vs. 9. “And as Jesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man named Matthew, sitting at the ref ceipt of the custom: and he saith unto him, Follow me. And he arose, and followed him.” For Jesus to call a tax collector to be a follower was a bold thing to do in view of the attitude of Jews toward publicans, and tax collectors in particular. The collector usually charged what he could get. and kept any extra money beyond the required taxes. Jesus saw good in Matthew that his critics because..his.yardstick was different. Vs. 10. “And it came to pass, as Jesus sat at meat in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with and his disciples. “Matthew was host at a dinner honoring Jesus and naturally invited his. friends, who were publicans, so-that they too" might meet Jesus. Those people who. violated any of the teachings of the rabbis, such as carrying a package on the Sabbath, were considered sinners. The term •sinners’ also included those who defied moral laws as well as ..cermonial regulations. Vs. 11-13, “And when the Pharisees saw it. they said unto his disciples, Why eaeth your Master with publicans and sinners? . . But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physical, but they that sick. . . But go ye and learn what that meaneth. I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come so call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” In the orient, a banquet is a public affair, so the Pharisees, while not invited to the feast, entered and looked 09. Eating together has always beeiT cdnsidered an exceptionally high form of social contact, and, by eating with publicans and sinners, Jesus was. putting himself outside the area of social acceptability. The publicans and sinners moral- - l.v and spiritually sick, but the Pharisees regarded themselves as highly moral, since they observed the law and traditions, and therefore did not consider that Jesus could be of any service to them Christ adomnished the Pharisees that he regarded mercy and kind tie, dinerit of others—more important than any sacrifice, or the observance of religious traditions. Vs. 28. “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.” In this verse Paul repudiates all claims on behalf of any distinct class of people to superior provi leges in Christ, Before Christ all men are on the same level. The Greeks divided people into two groups — barbarians and themselves. The Jews were even more contemptous of the Gentiles, salves were inferior to I their masters and women inferior 1 to men. Paul dreamed of man-kind-united in Christ. Book Review Amazing Grace, by Donald Demary. | Discussion on fl ■ Questions Discussion Questions on the Sunday school Lesson, justice to Minorities, for Sunday, August 17. 1. How do we go about trying to understand people different from ourselves? 2. What relationship should one have with foreign students, servicemen away from home, migrant workers who temporarily reside in one’s town? 3. What are some problems of minorities in this country? 4. What are some of the ways in which brotherly love should express itself? 5. How can the church help to realize the dream of a universal family_of God? Clericus says: The comrtiand to love God and our neighbor is based on the eternal nature of God. Since God is love, love is the fulfillment of God’s changeless law. The greatest unity in the world tak es place when mankinnd assembles at the communion table and at the foot-of the cross. When we draw near to Christ, all- human barriers fall away. Brotherly love is the world’s best evidence of Christianity and the mainspring of true service. I Do You 1. What hero of Israel asked God to help him destroy a temple? 2. What prophet of Israel was born in answer to his mother's prayer for a son? • 3. On what occasion did Solomon utter a great prayer? 4. Why was Daniel thrown into the lion’s den? 5. What book of the Old Testament contains many prayers? Great Hearts One can live without arms and legs, without eyes or ears, even without mouth or throat, and with a most defective and subnormal brain, but nobody can, live without a heart. The heart is at once the seat of life, and the seat of manhood; for. no matter how good the head may be, it is the heart that makes' us what we are. A man may be a brilliant intellectual, the bearer of proud de- 1 giees from learned institutions, an executive with great responsibilities and capacity, but unless he has a good heart, his manhood, is deficient. . . The great societies are those' dominated by those with great hearts, who may be actually ignlorarrt. but whose manhood is shown by every act. A society can live without great brains but it perishes without great hearts. — Editorial in Pittsburgh Courier. DO YOU KNOW ANSWERED 1. Samson — Judges 16:28-30. 2.
