THE DECATUR DAILY DEMOCRAT, DECATUR, INDIANA
CONNIE {Continued from Page One) letter Mrs. Nicholas wrote five days bfore Teel was killed said there could be no “halfway point” in thir relationship. The letter indicated she was planning suicide since even if Teel gave up her yoanger rival because “there might be anothr Laura and I just couldn’t take it anothr time.” Teel’s will, in 1945, was filed for probate Wednesday. It bequeathed his entire estate, estimated at more than' $150,000 to his wifej Elizabeth. DEMOCRAT (Continued from one) are certain to discuss the fate of Democratic National Chairman' Paul M. Butler, who also is Indiana nation a 1 committeeman. About two years ago, Butler promised to resign his IndiaHft post, but during the ramificationsof party events he always has failed to carry out his voluntary statement. To reporters, he has said many times: x “There is no vacancy in the position of Indiana national committeeman.”. 1= Campbell to Committee? However, Butler now is in the doghouse with the victorious Hartke backers. Butler supported Marshall Kizer, state senator and 3rd District chairman, for the senatorial bid against Hartke. The Hartke group now is championing Alex Campbell of Fort Wayne, Allen County chairman, for national committeeman. Cambbell, a former federal district attorney and erstwhile assistant attorney general, also is a former Democratic nominee for U.S. senator. A number of the shrewder Democratic observers have cast aside the thought that Hartke will be a pushover winner this fall. Good prices for farm products, higher market quotations, apparently abating the recession, and the quietude along the Sherman Adams front in recent days have contributed to this opinion. On the other hand, the Democratic leaders say that the senatorial combat is a repetition of the tortoise and the hare story. The tortoise—Hartke —is on the track nearly every night while the hare—Governor Handley—is basking in the shade of the Jenner tree, according to these Democrats. HAVESIEST (Continued from Page one) half Tnch ”of rain fell in Monroe township, at the Ben Mazelin farm. Another half inch was left in the rain gauge on the Austin Merriman farm in Blue Creek township. On the Ivan Huser farm, in Hartford township, .4 inch of rain fell. In Geneva, .3 inch fell, after 4 p.m. Wednesday, Jack Hurst reported this morning. A half inch of rain, accompanied by high wind, was reported from the Harley J. Reef farm, in Jefferson township. 23XENT - (Continned from Page one) sTudy the costs and rates for himself.' The Decatur school city budget and rate are worked out by the Decatur school board, working closely with the superintendent. The school board will hold an open hearing on the proposed budget Aug. 28 at 8 p. m. at the superintendent’s office. Taxpayers favoring or opposing the budget have a right to appear and be heard at that time. The school trustees will then present the budget and tax rate to the county auditor by Sept. 6. The levy will then be fixed by the county tax adjustment board. Any taxpayers still feeling aggrieved may appeal to the state board of tax commissioners for a final hearing. This is done by filing a petition with the count)' auditor by Sept. 22. NOTICE OF ADMINISTRATION Entitle n<>. r,:ts2 In the Adams Circuit Court of Adams Cojunfy, Indiana. COUNCIL (Continued from rage one) pers published a report from the Ministry of Defense announcing the conclusion of military maneuvers in the Caucasus and Turkestan which border on Turkey and Irpn. The maneuvers began July 18 at the height of the Middle East crisis. Under United Nations rules, an emergency session pf the assembly must be convened within 24 hours after the council votes such a call. U.S. sources said they expected the assembly to be called into session Friday afternoon and sit for “about 10 days” *in an emergency meeting which is expected to bring a Western plan to guarantee the integrity of the Middle East countries, with the participation of Russia. session of the General Assembly before the council adjourned debate on July 22 to allow time for the eventually fruitless negotiations for a meeting of the heads-of-government. The Soviet resolution was revised Wednesday to eliminate reference to, American and British "intervention” in the Middle East. But it still called for the “immediate’ withdrawal of the AngloAmerican troeps from Lebanon and Jordan. ’ The U.S. resolution called for the emergency assembly session to consider the plight of Lebanon. The United States planned to revise the measure to put a broader item on the Middle East question before the assembly.
